Villa 2 – 2 Preston; We threw that away

I’m stunned.

The first half sounded superb and Tony Morley suggested that the first half was the best we’d played for around two years. Indeed, it sounded like even Westwood, Gabby and Hutton were playing really well and Johnstone hardly touched the ball.
At one stage, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if we were 4-0 up; we were that impressive.
So what happened?

We went in two up at half time and things should have been very comfortable.
Nothing changed when the teams came back on and we retained the same 4-1-4-1 that seemed the best balanced we’ve been in a long time.

Yet we still managed to let them back into it and this surely has to be a mental thing?

Steve Bruce, who I don’t see got it wrong today, even though I feared for us from the off when I saw the line-up, must quite simply be pulling his hair out.

I predicted a 0-0 today and I’d have taken that.
But to have played so well in the first half and still end up drawing?
That’s a massive 2 points dropped, whichever way you look at it.

There are plus points in that we showed that we can do it.
But we have to show more resilience if we’re going to get to the play-offs.
Lansbury looked ok and that’s another plus.
Along with us retaining our home record.
Oh, we got two goals too.

But I’m still massively disappointed.

      1. Missus has locked the booze cabinet 🙂

First equation is the Taylor / Ayew swop deal plus cash
        Second equation -99% Tshibola
        – 65% – 50% – 2 to leave but who?
+50% + 95% – I thought the latter was Bedeau but seems that it might be this mystery deal
Off to buy a mystic octopus

      1. Best one ever was when Sir Ron signed Denis Mortimer and presented him as a Christmas present to the fans – awesome!

  1. Yep…Denis Mortimer…what a signing.
Could it be Rhodes AND a big signing then?….not sure if Rhodes is completely a no-go now. My man has been more ‘secretive’ with his messages today!

    1. If Villa have managed to keep this signing under the radar does that suggest someone coming in from abroad – just hope its not Robbie Keane!

        1. Also papers still saying we’re signing Bedeau from Bury – I’m completely non plussed but all is well Giddy as the booze cupboard has been unlocked 🙂

    1. When did we ever have a really exciting last day transfer window with players coming in that were any good? Dr. T celebrating the Chinese New Year?

  2. Hitch…dont know mate but I’m having trouble keeping up!

Telegraph claiming we could be in for Scott Hogan. SSN saying Hogan wanted by Crystal Palace and UNNAMED Championship club!

    1. Yeah I wondered whether we’d gone for Hogan but it doesn’t really make sense when we could get Rhodes for less and SB really rates him

      1. Various sources quoting “£15m” for Hogan.

Not sure that stacks-up [especially with Rhodes available at around £10m] since it almost certainly would mean having to try and recoup some big money somewhere else.

Of course if they’ve managed to offload RM for anything like what we paid for him…

  3. B’ham Mial now suggesting that Westwood could be on his way to Burnley for £6m.

If that’s true, I can imagine many posters on here celebrating…

        1. Too true Giddy…..the likes of Guzan, Richards, Gabby and Lescott are the ones I despise. Anyone who gives everything in the Claret and Blue shirt will always have my respect.

          1. I wish the guy the best and always felt he was made the scapegoat for the failings of many others. He always gave his best and how quickly have people forgotten the early goal he scored against Hull in 2015 which pretty much ensured our survival that season.

  4. Yes I’m just that, midfielder that don’t create chances, I’ll go as far as saying he did his best but negative result. Wish him better days.

  5. Reckon the media are pi**ed off because they can’t find out who this ‘mystery’ player is so are just throwing out names in desperation.

Why would we pay £15m for Hogan when we could get Rhodes for £10m – ah now I see Bruce’s cunning plan – trying to get him withdrawn for tomorrow’s game 🙂

    1. Probably right about Hogan. Boro lost out in their bid for a new striker which could be a stumbling block in our pursuit of Rhodes……thats my guess!

        1. Giddy…you could in the old days. Not sure about the present day rules on that one. Would be a great earner for Sutton. Bound to live on TV as well!

        1. Sutton have one but only allowed by THE FA in non league football, so why are Sutton allowed to play on it in the FA CUP don’t make sense to me

  6. nice to see posts in support of the black sheep players like hutton and westy. both receive to much abuse for trying their best. i wish westy all the luck if he leaves.

6 mill to burnley thats some fee for westy. can anybody shed some light on this ayew swap. is it straight swap or plus cash. i thought ayew was valued around 10mill and that left back is valued a few summer back 1mill seems a big gap in values

  7. Sorry mate…my source as been very ‘guarded’ today. No idea why. He’s not posted anything for the last 3 hours so I guess he’s busy. From what I gather he has something to do with Little Aston hospital who, apparently, do the medicals!

  8. Well thats me for today. Off to the boozer for a few jars!
***** latest mssage I’ve received***** could be as many as 4 tomorrow, NOT including Taylor******

  9. Off topic of the new signings mainly, but I confirm I will be delighted to see the back of Westwood. He wasn’t despicable like Richards, Lescott and Gabby latterly, but he was way out of his depth. He would not look exceptional in the National league.Talking of which:-

I was at Gander Green Lane yesterday, met a load of old boys who played in my era and we all saw Sutton give a Leeds team the run around. You can imagine how those who were watching or playing in 1970 when Leeds won 6-0 felt.

The FA have sanctioned 3G/4G pitches up to National League and in all their cup competitions, provided the pitches in National League [Sutton & Maidstone] are of international size. They are; so hilarious to hear Lawro mention the small Sutton pitch which is 2 yards longer and just as wide as Anfield!

Switching Sutton v Arsenal to Emirates is not an option. The current rule states if there are safety concerns the Professional Game Board may authorise a switch to the nearest suitable ground, which would be Chelsea.
