Villa 2 -1 Spurs; nervy, but totally deserved. What an awful ref!

Well, I thought we totally deserved that.
The first half, we looked like a real top, competing for the title side, in the way we controlled the game.
We played a very high defensive line that made me a bit nervous, but proved to be totally the correct way to go.
Spurs were reduced to trying to get the ball in behind us, which invariably failed, or long shots.
Emery got his tactics spot on and once they took Richarlison off, I knew it wasn’t working for them.

The referee was a disgrace today and if it wasn’t a libellous statement, I’d suggest he’d been bunged. Hence I can’t suggest that at all (ahem).
It seemed to me that he was just itching to give any 50-50 to Spurs and it was interesting to see so many Villa fans thinking that Kane would be given an iffy penalty.
The fact that he was, was no surprise then.
Was it iffy? In truth, I think we’d have wanted it if it was the other way round.
But then, I wanted lots of fouls given to us when they weren’t.
Which reminds me. Since when have Spurs resorted to just pushing players over if they can’t win the ball fairly?
They did this a lot today and it does them a disservice, for a team that has a rep for playing decent footy, imo.

Still there dubious tactics didn’t work and we went on to get a thoroughly deserved win.
We worked harder and wanted it more.

After my criticism of Bailey and my being undecided about Ramsey, it was probably fitting that they combined for the first. What do I know? (yes, I know. Nothing, along with the rest of us)

And Luiz took a great free.

But it was McGinn who again caught the eye. He worked his guts out and looked back to his old self.
Kane was mostly in his pocket and he actually seems to have improved the way he rolls players.
He does it in such a fashion, it makes me laugh.

A great win then, with surprisingly lots of energy on display.

Happy days!

  1. 🎶 VILLA VILLA VILLA VILLA OH OH OH OH OH OOOOOH. VILLA VILLA VILLA VILLA OH OH OH OH OH OOOOOOH 🎶

  2. Great article Badger.

That’s the first result achieved from the remaining fixtures.

That’s the double over Spurs this year, and we’ve not done that in many a year. All praise Emery.

Now the big one. Win at Liverpool and we should be getting ready to board the flights to Europe. The scousers have won 6 on the trot. If they beat Leicester surely probability will shine on us and they will drop points to us (hopeful thinking me thinks).

    UTV

  3. I was going to post a considered critique of today’s game, the officials and VAR.

Instead – woohoo great win UTMV

  4. Badger and friends

Just marvelling in our win and it struck me. Competition! We are now being linked with some amazing players who will create a level of competition I’ve never witnessed at Villa Park in my life time. Undoubtedly some of the current 11 will become back up players and that is the competition we need to drive all the team forward.

Case in point. Diego Carlos was bought in to replace Mings or Ezra. Carlos is now fit but cannot displace either of these two, who have raised their game. Just imagine if we have on our bench Ramsey, McGinn and Bailey chomping at the bit. They will have to raise their standards and consistency to new levels. With Emery in charge this is a mouth watering prospect.

  5. That ref was a Spurs supporter no doubt about it .some of them tackles the spuds did was beyond any true football players, a card. Are they refs that from the amateur league’s because they are not a brand of referees for the Premiership. Still it might have been Oliver, or Dean , and dropped us in the shite by even worse decisions. Still a win is a win well done the lads .

  6. Terrific win. Emery essentially saying he got his clean sheet today as it “wasn’t a penalty.” Everyone could see Kane dived. I was watching with a mate in Cyprus and he said there’s no way he can give that. To which I replied “and that’s exactly why he will.” Pathetic, both from Kane (again at VP), and the clown of a ref. Consider, if someone goes to a shooting range and throws themselves in front of a bullet, does that make the person who fired the bullet a murderer? Kane’s action reminds me of those scumbags who throw themselves in front of moving cars to try and get an insurance payout. T-WAT. Hang your heads in shame, England’s captain (embarrassing) and all the bent ‘officials’ involved in that farce today.

Oh, and well done the Villa, by the way. 🙂

  7. I take it we are dependent on Arsenal, Newcastle, to beat Brighton and they
Have Tottenham. It’s a big ask. I just hope Lady Luck is with us on the days we want. At the and of all this I’ll be proud anyway as we have the man in charge plus the owners that will build us to be the best. UTV

  8. Brentford will have a say. They have Spuds next and Citeh at home on the last day. Would love it if they beat both of these – still won’t be enough for the Arse, though. Another massive game against 12 men next week for the Villa, and I don’t mean the Kop.

  9. I see Oliver doing his best again with duff decisions against The Hammers . How the hell can a player not stop himself from hitting a post not using his hand. I think common sense was needed of which Oliver doesn’t have .well Gunners are 1 down so up to now forget booking abroad to see us in the big time games.

  10. With Brighton thrashing Arsenal at The Emirates I reckon we’re looking at a tussle for 7th and the Europa Conference.

I think that’s a distraction we don’t need next season so I’d settle for 8th. Just got to make sure that neither Brentford nor Fulham creep past us.

Going to be tricky holding onto 8th though!

    1. Precisely. I know Mourinho cried when he won it, but I really don’t want the domestic season derailed before it starts by the Europa tin-pot bullshit league. Brighton look a frightening prospect and could well spoil Emery’s excellent recent record at VP at the end of the month. Still plenty to do and I’d definitely take 8th over 7th.

  11. Just when you’d expected a nailed on Arsenal win, what bloody happens!
Gotta agree with the 8th place finish. 6th and 7th to be avoided as that ECL is a joke.
I’d much rather concentrate on bedding in new signings next season and pushing higher. It sounds funny saying that but Emery really is the real deal. I only think we’ll see Olsen, Bailey, and maybe Digne out the door, but we need competition for places so what happens if Moreno gets a knock? Digne is the perfect replacement just like Targett would have been. He’s been part of the best defence in the Premiership. I expect to see Cash back and Ash as cover. (Try saying that superfast after a few whiskies!).
Hey! Hey! We’re on our way!!!!
Liverpool could be the mother of all battles too this Saturday.

  12. Very vert happy with 8th go again next season and maybe a great cup run would love we have a squad now who could win a cup

    1. I’m looking for top 4 next season at this level of performance!!!!!!
You’ve seen the stats, only Arse and Citeh above us pointswise since Emery joined!!!!

  13. I see Ashley Preece is stepping down from his role at Birmingham Live reporting on all things Villa.

Must admit I didn’t know he is a huge Villa fan.

Good luck mate in your new role.
    UTMV

  14. Pool just given a VAR decision for offside when I reckon he was at least 6″s off. Shocking, but totally expected.

    1. Thought the same Badger – one rule for a few, another for the many!

  15. Sorry, Traore and Coutinho should have been added to the ‘Out’ list.
    Brighton or Barcodes win Thursday?

  16. I’d take 7th and a European Conference place. Why when so many in here are against? It gives a chance to give some of the young and up and coming players matches. Further, I am sure it helps with recruitment.

  17. I’d rather be in the Conference than out of it too, Sid.
It gives your players experience and I’d expect they’d want it too.
I get that it drains your squad, but say we get 5th next year, won’t it drain the squad after that?
I’m not sure I get this wanting to put it off.

    1. Not entirely in favour of the Conference mainly because all the games are played on a Thursday. That’s my main concern.

I think it’s had quite a negative effect on West Ham’s league performance this season.

You’re right Badger, we will need a significantly larger squad to manage the games built over one transfer window rather than three. Some of those players earmarked for the door, would probably have to stay.

But if we do get 7th, which I reckon is the only realistic aim, then of course I’ll be happy and hope my concerns are unfounded.

  18. Toney banned for 8 months for illegal betting with immediate effect which means he can’t play again until January next year.

    Also fined £50k.

One does wonder why players break these clear rules – does he have a betting problem (no requirement to seek help) or is it just arrogance that they won’t get caught?

    1. £50k? That’s laughable.
It should have been a million.
I’d guess it’s boredom more than anything.

  19. Mateu Alemany has decided to stay at Barcelona. Should we be disappointed or relieved? If he can’t make up his mind on his own future then probably not a big miss. Maybe he found out that Villa isn’t in London or by the coast.

    1. He probably saw what a dump Brum is and actually felt our rubbish weather when he came to talk!
      Seriously, that is odd.
Apparently on the same contract terms too, after we were going to give him a big pay rise.

      Something major must have happened.
I don’t see it as anything to worry about.

      1. I can only think he wanted too much power which was unacceptable to Villa.

Oddly, in one report it said – ‘he didn’t think the project was as good as originally he had thought it to be’ (Villa not a big enough club?) it was a translation from Spanish though which can throw up some oddities.

It didn’t work so move on,

    2. Never a serious move. The man has an agent himself who was tasked with getting him a pay rise at Blona, so Villa come in with a bigger salary and he uses that to twist Blona’s arm. I smelled a rat when he said he would complete the summer biz for Blona before moving. Unheard of! Once he announced he was off he would have been asked to leave the car keys and get himself a taxi.

      1. We don’t need this arsehole. Move on.
P.s. Blona sounds like a name Roald Dahl would give to a plus sized hooker addicted to cream cakes.

  20. It’s being suggested that he backed out because the spend isn’t going to be as big as he thought.
That’s a bit worrying if true, as I think now is exactly the time when we need to go big in our thinking.

I don’t think for one minute that Emery will be with us for ever (but if he is it’ll mean he’s been a raving sucess), but I’m fairly sure he’s the man that will at least set us in good stead.

    1. I suppose it depends on how much he wanted to spend as compared to our owners – which doesn’t mean that they’re not going to invest a considerable amount over the summer – even more now they don’t have to pay Alemany’s inflated salary!

Anyway, I’m sure NSWE / Emery will have a plan B
