Contrary to the odd suggestion that this was an easy home tie, I always thought this was going to be a difficult game.
I did manage to predict the score, but fortunately, I got it the wrong way round.
I believe Bournemouth made six changes for today’s game, but I’m not exactly sure what that says about them. Was this a weakened side?
If so, they put up a very good performance.
As for us, Carles Gil started and Westwood was dropped rested.
I have to say, Bournemouth looked easily the better side in the first half.
They attacked us and made our defence look decidedly dodgy, something that a few Prem clubs have been unable to achieve.
The defence wasn’t helped much by the midfield though, as Bournemouth’s five made our midfield look poor.
I’ll keep saying it, but Lambert obviously disagrees;
Richardson and Cleverley offer nothing that we don’t have elsewhere in our squad.
They’re both totally ineffective and offer nothing but apparent work rate, in my opinion.
No wonder our midfield doesn’t score or create anything.
Get rid of both.
So, half time then and Bournemouth looked by far the better side and I was worried that we’d lose.
And then came Gil’s strike early on in the second half, which was a beauty.
The first shot on target and a goal.
This totally eased the pressure on us and we looked a different side after that.
Was this down to the pressure being eased or was it because Bournemouth’s plan had been ruined though?
I personally suspect it was more the latter and to me, the opposition looked like they’d had the wind knocked out of their sails.
With the pressure eased, Villa started to knock the ball around quite well and we started to look the better side. Just like a Prem side against a championship side is supposed to.
While it was always a pretty open game, it opened up even more when Andi Weimann finished sharply for our second.
The game was won then, but Bournemouth resolutely came back to get a goal in return in the last minute or so..
Thoughts?
If we hadn’t got that first goal and Bournemouth had, we’d have lost today. It really does seem that we’re short on confidence.
Still, you can’t knock the result.
We’re in the hat for the next round and that’s all that matters.

Silverware is all that counts and finishing 15th means nothing, after all.

Villa haven’t won the FAC since the year before I was born, and I’ve almost given up expecting them to do it in my lifetime.

We were poor first half, but picked it up in the second. 2 great goals ended up deciding what was a pretty even game.
Just a few things to say. On the positive side, the centre backs played really well again as did Hutton. Gil looks a superb signing and getting Delph to re-sign is a big win for the club.
On the other side…I still have no idea what formation we are playing. Weimann has so much more of an impact in the middle, and yet he is constantly stuck out wide. Cleverley had one of his better games today, and he still offers nothing. More worryingly, if Bournemouth had scored first, I think we would be out.
Anyway, no point dwelling on the negatives…we’re through, we scored more than one goal and we have a player capable of scoring outside the 18 yard box. Happy days.
I don’t think we have a bad squad, just a dog awful loser of a manager.
I am pleased with Gil’s great goal. Great technique and bodes well for the future.
Further good news is Delph signing a new long term contract. Is he aware of something big about to happen? Pure speculation do you think a new buyer is all but in place, may be a very wealthy buyer? Why else would he commit to such a long contract?
Very interesting take; might also be a reason Gil was prepared to sign. We can but hope. Anyway amidst all the doom and gloom Delph and Gil are two positive stories. Now if Benteke can get himself into gear and PL starts playing Weimann as a double strike force off his shoulder – maybe just maybe……………………..
I’ve not been a huge fan of Delph’s – for every promising performance he seems to have played several complete howlers, and some of his tackling is downright dangerous.
However, I’ll give him a lot of credit for the statement he put out today: ‘loyalty’ is something conspicuous by it’s absence in modern football, and at least Delph recognised that the club have put him into the England side, and stuck by him when he’s had a couple of serious long-term injuries. Pity that the likes of Downing don’t know the meaning of the word.
He’s not loyal noone else has put an offering for him. Same as Benteke spurs didn’t put offer in so he uses is as insurance and do e virtually fuck all ever since

i think sumat will happen soon, so surviving this season is important. any sale of the club will depend on staying up. delph signing a extension will boost the confidence of the squad, this win will along with our name in the hat, gives the players something to look forwards too and a break from the league. had we lost today then the pressure would have got too much.
gil was a breathe of fresh air, hopefully he will rub off on the other players

watching that tranmere game 2 things doesn’t earl barret remind you or cissohko as he was fairly decent defending, speedy forward runs but sad crosser of the ball, saunders how he moves across the defenders and compare this to benteke lack of moving. also brilliant crossing for all the villa goals in the 2nd leg.

2.5 hours from my seat in Trinity road to my armchair in Surrey, the time hasn’t got worse. Crazy but it would take much longer from here to Spurs or West Ham. My seat was right behind the trajectory of Gil’s peach of a shot. No keeper would have picked that one out of the top corner. Goals change games for the current Villa squad, they all perked up and got onto the front foot. Weimann for once did not take a touch but finished with a side-foot volley to end the contest.
Actually Badger, Bournemouth made 9 changes from their strongest squad – six of which were unforced. What does it say about them? 1/ Eddie Howe is only interested in cup progress with his Reserves. Bournemouth Res are a neat passing side, who showed they could match Villa around the pitch in the first half but without a cutting edge. Like Villa they have not got 2 reserve strikers who are as good as their first pair, but when Howe brought the best 2 on they scored a well constructed consolation goal.
Delph gave us 2 pieces of good news today, he doubled his sale value by signing, and he missed the match through injury. I have yet to be at Villa Park to see us win a game in which Delph started. I hope we sell him this week for double the money.
Let’s hope the Villa are lifted for the Gunners next week.

The clubs banded about few weeks ago which was now crap media mania, the likes of Tottenham and other clubs, I think he does have a roll at Villa, problem is he also can let us down in yellow and red cards, Sinclair to me would have been a disaster to Villa,another bench warmer and sick notes.

So even Bournemouth played a weakened side for cup and we still struggled to beat them with a virtual first choice team as all our players are crap anyway it dosnt make much difference what team we put out to be fair. Oh and why was Cleverley playing again total shite. That’s being overly Negative about the Villa Oohah. I thought Villa were solid at the back, and even Richardson put in a good performance at left back.
Delph – and Cleverly when he watches the replay – can take an object lesson from Bournemouth’s O’Cane (bandaged head) and Arter. How to switch the play from left to right and when to make forward runs is what Cleverly needs to learn. How not to give the ball away when there is no cover and when to pass the ball is what Delph needs to learn.
Sanchez and Gil were good today, Weimann better now there is Gil is making runs into space. Only Benteke was very disappointing. The advice I would give him is that he isn’t Peter Crouch or Andy Carroll so attack the near post not the back stick.
Only thing in what you’ve said Originallondonlion is Sanchez, ( 24) he’s slow didn’t track back,yards behind on a run. That’s only what I can see on MOTD ,but I’ve seen him looking as if he’s got lead boots on in other matches, I know he can spot openings but defending ??.

Good second half performance today and Gill looks a good acquisition.
One major point though to think on gents…. Earlier in the window we were led to believe money would be available, Gill came in for around £3 million and there was clearly a lot of interest from us in Sinclair and Lambert hoped 2 more (after Gill) would come in – roll on a week or so and Lambert says the Sinclair deal is dead due to finances and we wouldn’t be bringing anyone else in, then, Delph suddenly signs a new 4.5 year deal presumably on better wages.
Am I putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 by assuming that Lerner is so tight that the only way to keep Delph was to use any remaining transfer kitty towards his wages? It seems pretty clear to me.
The one consistent on this blog is the ability to turn a positive into a negative. Delph’s on a loser whatever he does. If he moves he’s a money grabbing traitor that doesn’t understand loyalty and if he stays it’s because no one else is stupid enough to take him for nothing (which he could have moved for in the summer). Really I know things are bad but some if you need to get a grip. Let the abuse commence!

While I didn’t want him and still don’t, you’re quite right. Well on here anyways, a lot of Villa fans seem quite happy with it. Of immense proportions actually, they think it’s some saving grace. But on here if he actually came on here and read anything, which of course he doesn’t, he couldn’t win with fans.
I personally have always thought Delph was over rated and bigged up way too much by the media, but having said that, he is still a strong player and I am glad that loyalty is still around and he has committed to the club.
If this weekend has proved anything it is that there is substantial talent in the Championship and in Div 1. It was said, and we all probably believed, ‘they only look good at their level – put them up against premiership opponents and they will not get a kick.’
This is good news both for the England manager who never seems to look at the lower level – and for Paul Lambert if he has a low budget and under-performing players on big wages.
It proves one more thing, there are tactically astute managers in the FL who can set up a team to bridge the quality gap.
Completely agree with everything you just said. It’s good to see talented English players coming through, but more top flight teams need to take a punt on them, us included! Bournemouth have some brilliant players.
It just goes to show what a good manager who trains his players to play and move as a team and that it’s also possible to move when you don’t have the ball! We beat their Reserves not because of good tactics or game play but because we had better quality players simple as that, for me it just shows how inept lambert really is! Good news on delph though with gil now in the team I tink delph will shine more and if we get another winger to replace gabby/weimann I think we would hav a decent mid table team, with a new manager of coarse!
Although I agree with Cleverly, I thought Richardson had a good game especially since he seemed to be the only player in midfield that would track back to defense; he even kicked the ball off the line in the first half!
Confidence is lacking in certain areas, I honestly think Wiemann looked a lot closer to that of previous season which is a very good thing, but Benteke on the other hand, where has his confidence gone? Rather than shooting, he would keep dragging the ball wider and wider until any sort of opportunity had disappeared. Personally, I felt that he only really started to try and move around the pitch to create space once we had gone 1 up. He seemed to feed of this, but this shouldn’t be the case, he should be doing this from the get go.
Carlos Gil has the potential to be something special for this club, and it really does look like we are building a solid team for the future. We just need to get the confidence installed up front because we all know how devastating the beast can be once his form is in order.
Summer should be interesting, would like to see another CB brought in for cover, a potential left back that can also cross. another attacking midfielder, a right mid and another striker.
Lambert is retaining the players *DELPH* brining in what looks to be fresh and reliable talent, Sanchez, Gil. I can only wonder what players we would be bringing in if we had a bigger budget.
