Villa 2 – 1 Burton; Rubbish, but we won

Ok, it wasn’t great, but we quite simply got another three points.

Yes, I know, I’ve seen the stats, where it seems they were the better side.
Indeed, it sounded like it too.

But what more can we ask for, than getting the win?

I know it might not be too pleasant to watch and indeed Steve Bruce pretty much said we were rubbish.
But we still got the points.
Which is the point.

I assume you’ve got the idea of what this post is about and I won’t labour it.

I’ll move onto the performance and it was basically poor wasn’t it?
You know that if a side like Burton out-possesses you at home, you’ve played poorly.

There are hardly any individual performances to shout about, apart from maybe Mark Bunn, who kept us in the game.
Anyone still want to play Gollini ahead of him?

It’s nearly all quite disappointing really and there’s surely no doubt that Leeds are going to thrash us at home.

Except we have a manager who knows how to win.

Apparently he was fuming during the game and was even heard to say that “I’ve had enough of this”.
Which all suggests he knows exactly where our problems are and will look to sort things as soon as is possible.

It isn’t all going to happen in this window, but I’m willing to bet good money that we’ll see some of the rubbish leaving.

It isn’t going to be those that are highest on our list, but some will leave.
And Bruce will replace them with better quality.

Because he knows what’s required, whereas I don’t think we’ve had that sort of manager since, dare I say, MON?

To cut to the quick, we won.
Job done if we want to get promoted, even if it made for poor watching.

But the thought of this current side in the Premier league scares me.

With the money we can spend on players we should be assembling a team that should walk this league next season. Promotion this season after the start we have had is a tall order and we shouldn’t be blaming Bruce if it doesn’t happen. We need to stick with him as he has proven track record and our very best chance is with him as manager. I don’t give a shit about how we play. It’s a results division we are in and it’s results and points that will get us out of it.

Badger I wouldn’t worry about the team as it stands in the PL as it won’t get us there.

However I also feel that SB will find a solution. Another 4 players of the appropriate calibre and we could be shoo-ins for the play offs.

From what I hear SB may be going for 5 so the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned. Who we get in the January window is going to be crucial in any attempt at promotion this year.

I’ll be watching the January ins and outs with great interest.

Bottom line is we are learning the dark art of winning ugly. A good performance is a bonus the win is what matters. One of our best performances this season was away at Brighton yet we still only scrapped a point despite being the better side for most of the game. In this division most other teams have not got our quality up front and that is what is just keeping us in there. We all know midfield is a complete joke and if Bruce can sort that area out in Jan we have a great chance of top 6. The next 2 games will be hard for us Leeds at home will be a point at best and il be amazed if we beat them and Cardiff away is one of those places that we will probably bottle it like we did v Norwich. Though beating QPR away was psychologically a great win.

Oohah – ‘dark art if winning ugly’ – what a great line and absolutely nailed it. How long have we bemoaned managers not having a clue about in game management and substitutions – against Burton, SB made a couple of aggressive, risky substitutions which weakened the defence but led to the winning goal.

I’m going to the game tomorrow night and hoping for a win. Leeds playing well under Monk (who has never lost a game against us) but they won’t see playing Villa at VP as their ‘cup final’ so perversely I think we will find it easier playing against them – not easier to beat mind you!

What is impressive with this win is that it occurred in front of a near capacity crowd. I can’t recall we won at home in front of such a large crowd. We always seem to bottle it, even under MON’s reign. Well done SB.

Further congratulations to Dr Tony Xia. Great to hear he rejected £25m bid for Amarvi. This gives the club a base to start building a quality team. This made me think of all the players who left Villa for the promised land of a “bigger” club and sky top four glory. Do people agree with my analysis?
          Barry – Man City- success
          Young – Man Utd – ?
          Downing – Liverpool – failure
Milner – Man City – success
          Benteke – Liverpool – failure
Delph – Man City – failure

Actually Milner went to Liverpool first, and was mainly successful – though his managers did not rate him highly enough to start most games.

Few players established themselves at Villa and went on to be better players at another club, before Milner you have to go back as far as Crouch.

They left for the money. If Barry etc were on 50k at villa he would get at least a 100k at city for doing less! Can’t blame him I’d do the same

Being linked with a loan deal for Leicester’s Matty James – now that would be a good bit of business if he can rediscover the form before his cruciate ligament injury.

If we’re rejecting 25m then we can’t have too many issues with FFP?

Interesting point – more possibly they would prefer to sell some other players to ‘balance the books’ rather than Amavi.

Well I can see Gestede and Ayew going and they should bring in a bit.

As for Matty James he could be a good proposition and you’d think the Foxes would be kind to us after we let them come back from 2-0 down last season.

        Interesting times ahead hopefully.

i reckon gestede and kojack will be the two forwards shown the door, they reckon he will be involved with a deal bringing rhodes to villa. not sure about this, but gestede i think is on his way to middlesbro.

back to amavi if clubs like pool are placing bids of 25 to 30mill. doesn’t matter if we want to keep him, his agent will be in amavi ear day and night to get him to push for a move. maybe hes only here this season to repay us for his injury hit season last.

Can’t argue with your logic Nath. If we did manage to get promoted this season, might that change Amavi’s position or would it make even more sense to sell to fund new acquisitions!?

i wrote that before i heard it was a chinese club thats offered the 25mil. i think only a special big club will make him want to move. i do think hes a decent player and he hasn’t forgot the decent villa fans wish him good speedy recover. so he does feel like he owes them back.

Didn’t know that. Seems the Chinese Super League (or whatever it’s called) is going to appeal to the worst of the mercenaries and pay silly monies on transfers.
