Villa 1-0 Cardiff; Lucky, but hey, who cares?

It’s not often I resent the opposition getting the win if they deserved it, but Cardiff are the exception.
And even though I thought we were very lucky to win that game, as Cardiff were more the effective side, so I’m really glad we won this.

In some ways I admire Warnock for what he’s done with the Cardiff squad, but the donkey that he was for us, Joe Bennett, looked a different player, is now a dirty, fouling footballer. He is a typical example and that’s what Warnock gives to the game.
There’s no way on earth we taught him to play like that and his booking was well over-due.

Basically Cardiff are a dirty bunch of bastards.

So even though I thought Cardiff probably deserved it more than us, Jack Grealish hits a beaut, that had him turning away as soon as he struck it.
It was about the only way we would win the game, I think.

Johnstone saved us a couple of times and should probably get the MOTM, but goals win games, don’t they?

That’s a big blow to Cardiff, so I wonder how they will react? They’ve now not won in 3 games.

Fulham are on a remarkable run, Can they keep it up?

Dare I say that this league is way more entertaining than the Prem?
Er, yes, without a doubt.

I thought we played ok, which it seems some might disagree with.
But it doesn’t matter.
We won. And that’s all that counts.

your last sentence is how i would sum it up.

We won. And that’s all that counts.

it could prove to be a massive win. momentum was against us and something had to change or the season was goodbye from us. its a shame for cardiff they deserved the top two. they still might sneak it. fulham have been chasing so long. it might become a burden now being the hunted

Smug bastard Warnock. “You would think they won the world Cup at the end”. No Neil, we just glad to keep our promotion hopes alive by the skin of their teeth and beating a bunch of dirty bastards was a bonus. We basically got to win the final 4 games and hope Fulham loose 2 from 4 and Cardiff loose 3 from 5. Highly unlikely I know but you just got to keep believing until its not possible. A win on Friday guarantees us a playoff place and most would have taken that before a ball was kicked. Kodja will be key to us in the playoffs and it has to be a big plus to have him back now and looking sharp.

Are you forgetting what looked like a good shout of a penalty for us in the game, it was shown from all angles and to me its a pen.Hourihan had a bad game he missed a sitter with one on one, yes Johnstone made two terrific saves but I thought we shaded the game.well done the Villa.

Very entertaining game! Great to ease some pressure. No catching Fulham though, easy run in and theyre flying think they will win all their games. As ive said before we have a much better chance of winning the game when the opposition actually come at us which is why i think were still a good shout for going up through the playoffs because teams will have to. Its going to play havoc with the nerves but exciting none the less.

Never once expected Cardiff to throw their lead away. Absolutely shocking. Still got a game in hand but Fulham are 2nd which is far better for us. As it’s said, you want the teams in form to go up automatically and they and Millwall are those two teams. Be incredibly fascinating to see who sits 6th with 11th only 5 points off.

And that was a great hit from Grealish.

Absolutely Andrew. Would much prefer Cardiff in the play-offs than Fulham. Can’t see Fulham blowing it now. Grealish is going to be a great player if he stays fit, hope he does it at Villa.

Not sure, but haven’t Millwall got Fulham? Badger yes its all about opinions and yes we road our luck on two bad defences mix ups the one was down to Hourihane, he couldn’t co-ordinate his brain to kick it away, I think it was spotted when he was pulled off for Samba, Yes nice win let’s get them all only 4 left.

Bill – I get your frustration with Hourihane but he does get in the box and create chances – 10 goals from midfield not seen since Platty – so he really does offer something to the team.

Unfortunately Bill, unless you want the kids playing, he’s all we have. Lansbury is awful and unless you want Bjarnason next to Whelan… He has a lot to learn, especially if we go up it’s not seen if he’s actually good enough for the Prem, but he’s still our best option at the moment.

To be honest Andrew none are good enough for the premiership, with the exception of Chester, Grealish and Johnston, the the rest wouldn’t make it.

its ok being cocky after the game. but before the game. after losses to rangers and bolton norwich drawing against mighty hull. nobody on here predicted a win except me. cardiff dirty give it a rest. they dont have riches resources to compete. clubs like villa wolves derby etc maybe 20 teams have bigger budgets than little old cardiff. so they will use what ever they can to succeed. what is wrong with that. are we jealous of a small club like this. goes to show how low we sunk

clubs like ours have failed to use their resources we have, if cardiff are in the position they are. then its down to hard work by their team and failure of others. how can it not be deserved. if only villa had played with their passion and dedication. we wouldnt be stuttering against the lower clubs in the league. its against the lower clubs where we come unstuck. because we lack the same work rates and dedications

That’s an an interesting viewpoint Nath.
In fairness, I did say I admired what Warnock’s done for Cardiff, in some ways.

But even if we’re in major trouble next season, I don’t want us resorting to the tactics that their team displayed last night.
Deliberate clogging is an utter disgrace, imo.

Yes, use any advantage you can, no problem.
      But keep it fair.

I’d rather the club folded than we resort to that crap.
It’s quite simply not what this club is about and hopefully never will be.

As for our workrate, I couldn’t fault it last night and thought it was better than it’s been for a while.
Point taken though and I agree we haven’t worked hard enough at times.

True very true, we don’t have the same passion its been shown in nearlly all our games, the Wolves game was more to do with local rivals, so was Blues, its having that killer instinct and that we don’t have.I have a go at players I see not having that, Bjarnason, Houihane to me are not keen enough , we missed the boat by being lethargic when it needed players to fight. I’ll get over it but its made me angry to be so close and thrown away.

Derby are poor, and if league positions stay as they are, then we will surely be favourites to get to playoff final. Going back to last night, and comments about Cardiff being cloggers, and playing to their strength, I actually blame the officials. Players like Grealish and Kodja were getting kicked in the air, and not for the first time many challenges worthy of cards went unpunished. We are a better footballing team than Cardiff, but if they can get away with fouling throughout, and disrupting our style of play, then they will continue to do so.

i don’t want to defend cardiff for the rest of my life or bruce. but cardiff are much more than whats being said. they couldnt be getting the decisions all season. they are not a bad side.tough to play against if you want to pass through them. they will snap at you. but are we really going to say they are the first or last club to use such tactics.

lets not forget they beat wolves and us. they can play some decent affective stuff. they should have been ahead last night i thought before we scored. plus its not just cardiff that have roughed us up this season or grealish. unfortunately thats what happens in the championship. tackles and collisions not like premiership. where diving around you get points for 10 10 10 from the judges.

i am sure you guys watch villa blindfolded i saw many blatant villa fouls on cardiffs ex wolves player, the guy who roasted our many left backs. no mentions of this. fouling or singling out the opposition best player is a tactic used, since football was invented. we won the game yet we seem to be focussing on little wrongs that didnt affect the outcome. but when we lose you pull the manger or players to pieces. its getting more like a popularity contest around here and less about having good views.

Nath, I’ve previously slated Snodgrass for his cheating, mate.
And fwiw, I mostly agree with Warnock’s comments about Grealish’s whining and bitching all the time and trying to get players sent off (although he has some justification).

      No double standards from me.
I detest cheating, but accept that it’s sadly part of the game these days.

leeds have defensive injuries we have a advantages wounded opposition we like. watching the goalie commenting after the game, he states they have slacked off last few games. iam sure i said the same over the same period he said. work rates dropped and that was because they thought they were easy games. like ppl on here thought. but if you fail to respect the opposition before the game you will come unstuck during it.

Wakey Wakey Nath, time to get up, Villa playing tonight. Warnock adopted Revies tactics if you ask me, remember how he played his players by running infront of players that was receiving the ball , dirty play was Leeds, Ok time to predict the score, Villa to win 2-1 ..

Cardiff are a typical Neil Warnock team. 100% commitment for the whole game, and pretty strong in the challenge. I’m not sure that they cross the line to dirty but that’s a matter of opinion. We did make a few tasty challenges ourselves, and one particularly bad one from Hourihane that got him a booking.

The thing that pleased me was that we didn’t let Cardiff bully us. We didn’t play that well at times but always competed and threw ourselves in front of shots in the penalty area in a really committed way.

Cardiff could easily have been in front on a couple of occasions, and maybe it would have been a different game, but they didn’t score and it was a fantastic goal that deserved to win the match for us.

Having said all that I prefer the way refs tend to be a bit more prepared to let strong tackles go in the Championship as compared to the Premier League.

I said some time ago I didn’t fancy meeting Fulham in the play offs, and with their momentum they could well finish second. Cardiff we have a decent chance against but will need to do the same as last match and hopefully play a bit better. We do have that extra bit of class that they don’t have.

Millwall would be a concern because of their current form, but in truth you should expect tough games against any of the play off teams and it is all a bit of a lottery. I have to say I haven’t watched them so I don’t know how good they are. I’m not sure what affect playing them last game of the season at their place would have. They may need the victory and we wouldn’t unless we needed a result to control who we met in the semis.

We should win tonight, but with a play off spot pretty much secured we may take our foot off the gas and disappoint once more. I’ll go 2-1 to Villa but with my usual lack of confidence in the result!

Grealish is clearly our danger man. Teams that focus on stopping him should leave opportunities for others like Snodgrass and Adomah. These two in particular need to get back to their best asap. Grealish is an outstanding talent though, and I’m glad he has got his head down and is way stronger and fitter than before. He goes deep often, dragging his man marker away from the front of the oppositions back four. I like to see him getting around the penalty box as often as possible, and going past players. That’s where he has most impact, whether getting at the back four or winning free kicks in dangerous areas.

Kodjia will be getting fitter and sharper too. He could really be a big player in the play offs if he doesn’t get injured again. Bruce is doing the right thing bringing him back gradually. I expect he will do the same tonight. At some point he will need to start him though to see him get full match fitness. Tricky decision there.
