Villa 1 – 0 Arsenal; What a monster result!

Well, hands up, I really didn’t expect that result.
And it was super Trez, who scored again.
I told you he was the man!

Seriously though, that was a decent performance. We didn’t bottle it anywhere near as much as I did.

And maybe most importantly, Dean Smith called the game really well and tweaked things superbly.

Arsenal didn’t seem to be trying that hard, to be honest, but I’d expect they’d have enough to beat Watford, who also don’t look too bothered.

It’s basically all in our hands now.
And I just don’t know what to think.

Did Arsenal have an actual shot on goal? I’m really not sure.
And that’s some achievement, in our position.

Well done lads.
And you too, Dean.

Yep. I’m sure Jared Bowen went off injured too.
    Hopefully, it’s all good.

That’s good news (Bowen) – he’s one of those players that inevitably score against us. Let’s hope West Spam have their sun cream and beach hats on, on Sunday!

I can’t see Watford getting anything at Arsenal (famous last words -:) but Bournemouth could definitely get a result at Everton who might also be one the beach’.

Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on the transfer dealings and whether on reflection it’s been as bad as touted.

Douglas Luiz has been brilliant as the sitting midfielder post lockdown. Since Konsa has moved from right back to centre half he’s been immense. Trezeguet has come good with the goals at the business end of the season and works tirelessly.

Mings I’ll give credit to as he was a real leader last night, but standards had dropped since England call up. Wesley was starting to turn the corner and had a great game at Burnley prior to the injury. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the goals have dried up since then. Heaton a solid keeper with Premier League experience and again unfortunate with injury. Targett has been a bit of a disappointment, lightweight defending but sometimes a threat going forward. Engels had a strong start but tailed off. Nakamba, unspectacular and difficult first season.

That leaves the likes of El Ghazi and Hause who lets face it were signed off the back of last season. So low risk as we know what they’re about, not brilliant but can do a job from time to time. And Jota who Smith knew from Brentford days and has only had cameos.

I’ll ignore the Jan signings as that’s renowned for being a difficult window to deal in. With that being said, are we now only seeing the best of this team as it’s taken this long to gel. Not every signing will work out, but it seems to me that it’s a fairly even split to who’s performed and who hasn’t. I firmly believe that the injuries to big players at key points in the season hampered our momentum and we could quite feasibly have been looking up towards mid table.

I’ll take the claret and blue tinted glasses off now, haha.

pool chelsea game was special game breathe taking forward play by both. i watched the utds too. manure were rubbish and hammers were really on the game. i hope they do not feel the need to sign off with a win. cause if they wanted to make it a match sunday it then would be a hard game game for us. hopefully they will play out a meaningless bore draw. watford won’t win and soton need us to lose and they need to win so fingers crossed..

hey badger i think another poll would see us too sunday. question 50/50 will villa survive ?? i think if we asked that question before arsenal 90 % would have said no.just curious what the percentage is now.

also i am pretty confident now but i still wont say it out loud to mates who keep asking me lol saying it our loud will curse me so iam hush hish but deep down i am confident how are we all ?? feeling honestly

Fast Jet, you have some good points. I liked the team Smith started with that beat Arsenal. Maybe they will gel if we stay up… Or rather WHEN we stay up!

Nath, I think we’ll do it. I was 100% convinced we were finished a couple of weeks ago, but with the Palace win, the Everton game that was so gutting that we nearly won, Watford winning a couple and Tuesdays game… Bloody hell. Citeh did us a favour knocking a load in on Tuesday too, and the Hammers getting a massive point last night, I think we’ll get something on Sunday.
Sacking Pearson was suicidal. Bournemouth have been great but have ridden their Premier League luck for a bit too long now. And Norwich are just rubbish.
    I’m 90% sure we’ll do it.

After seeing Brentford blow their chances against two relegation teams, we have to expect the unexpected on Sunday. I really don’t think we should play for a draw because I can see a surprise in one or even both the other games. Everton and Arsenals season are over and I doubt that they will match the hunger of Bournemouth and Watford. We can beat West Ham if they aren’t at it but they are a form team and might want to end on a high.
We have the advantage but our away form is dismal and nerves have shown what damage it does to other teams.
As Tony Butler used to say, “get out your prayer mats”

Holte, it won’t be straightforward and my initial confidence is beginning to wane. This IS the game Smith et al really do have to earn their money – correct team selection and tactics will be essential but getting the mind set of the players right will be vital.

We can’t take anything for granted – look at Brentford, 8 straight wins and then two defeats to teams at the wrong end of the table and automatic promotion lost. Still, I’d rather be where we are now than before the Arsenal game.

Should villa start with tres up front and nakamba in as extra insurance then if get 2goal lead bring on Davies to shore up. It’s best go for the win than the draw.and tres the best chance of scoring goals.

Fastjet asks a good question. It isn’t possible to buy 10 players, expect them all to be a good blend. Many will fall short of the EPL task if they have no experience of it. If you have ever watched matches in the African Cup of Nations you will understand my saying players from that continent have more adjustments to make that a European player would.

I don’t rate Heaton. Reina though past his best, is still a more confident player coming for crosses.

Sir Alex said his priorities if building a team from scratch would be: Goal keeper, 1 prolific forward, full backs. That wasn’t how Villa spent their money and we haven’t proved Ferguson wrong. I am not surprised a player looks better at twin centre half than at full back, the latter is a more difficult job.

I would love to know what Smith’s instructions to Grealish are, before I criticise the player – but one of the two hasn’t used Jack in the right position. Mings makes mistakes when he lacks confidence in the GK behind him or when trying to play his way out of defence because nobody else will. When neither of those is a problem he looks a better player. Douglas Luiz is the star turn. We need a more mobile dead-ball specialist than Hourihane. Marvellous isn’t. so in sum our midfield won’t dominate even a mid table EPL team.

The forwards and McGinn since his return have been inadequate. The main failure they have is their goal attempts are off-target and they don’t seem capable of forcing the keeper to make a save, rather than aiming just inside the post and missing the goal. I doubt that can be cured at their ages, it should be something the better players learn in their teens.

todays game is most important game of our lives in recent years. much more important than reaching this season L cup final more than playfoffs finals. the silence is deafening lmao must be nerves .

i was on cherries fan forums they are quietly confident. pressure is off them and piles on us and watford. i also looked at each of the Opposition and each of the three teams needing to win to survive, us watford and cherries av all got the worst away records. each have only collected 10 points away. so who has the easiest game. i believe it is cherries cause everton have zero to play for. cherries can play out a meaningless draw and last ten fly at them and snatch the win. where arsenal and hammers are both tougher place to go last game. arsenal have had a tough season, got a cup final next up they could finish with a flourish and romp home against a low confident watford. hammers are on form they will not relax against us. we will need to show our new found game management and confidence to try to take the sting out of them quickly, we need to disarm them to want to play at a nice tempo and play like a end of season kick about. if we go to war with hammers and encourage them to we will lose for sure.

    everton 1 cherries 2
    arsenal 3 watford 0
    hammers 2 villa 2

I’m really hoping that late goal against Everton doesn’t prove costly. We know what we have to do. They will pinpoint Targett as our weak link just like most clubs do. He switches off and goes missing too many times plus he hardly ever stops crosses going in. Whoever plays in front of him will need to do their defensive duties.
I’m not going to predict results. I simply haven’t got a clue what will happen!
