Villa 1 – 0 Arsenal; What a monster result!

Well, hands up, I really didn’t expect that result.
And it was super Trez, who scored again.
I told you he was the man!

Seriously though, that was a decent performance. We didn’t bottle it anywhere near as much as I did.

And maybe most importantly, Dean Smith called the game really well and tweaked things superbly.

Arsenal didn’t seem to be trying that hard, to be honest, but I’d expect they’d have enough to beat Watford, who also don’t look too bothered.

It’s basically all in our hands now.
And I just don’t know what to think.

Did Arsenal have an actual shot on goal? I’m really not sure.
And that’s some achievement, in our position.

Well done lads.
And you too, Dean.

  1. Answer to you question!! No , not one and I thought we was brilliant today, Just West Ham to beat my next door neighbour and I’ll be happy chappy.

  2. Will wake up in the morning with a massive smile on my face! Awesome!
All in our hands now. Bournemouth and Watford both need a miracle whereas we need not to get stuffed.
    COME ON VILLA!!!!

  3. I was concerned when Elmo had to go off but Guilbert played really well. The only time I was nervous was when they attacked down Targetts side where they seemed to have too much room for putting crosses over.
I wonder what Watford will think about that no goal for Sheffield United? I heard talk of them taking legal action if it costs them relegation.

  4. yeah they had a shot at goal but none were on target lol. i concur we were brilliant. bare in mind the importance and what was riding on this game. we had good balance first half and even when arsenal tweaked their system twice second half we countered them moves,

i dont want to get too far ahead. but i am with hitch watford really have dug their own graves sacking peatson. they have all the football community on their backs. probably the players are dead against it too. dropping into the bottom 3 now will be very hard to get over, so can bournmouth beat everton away ?? off course they can. so we need to keep our feet on the ground and do the business at the hammers.

i have a great idea badger how to tweak this site and get you hung every game we play. why dont you rate each player and we can judge you on them ratings lol i think it would be fun and more debates could develop. if you use my idea i will want paying (kidding) i think i need to lay down before i collapse

  5. Just received and been told its true.

    In 1963/64
    1st div winners liverpool
    2nd div winners leeds
    3rd div winners coventry
Villa finished 4th from bottom in div 1 with 34pts

  6. Great performance, brilliant finish from Trez. Just got to do the same at West Ham on Sunday. Come on you Villa boys!

  7. They have to keep Smith now.what a win but can we do it again and I’m worried the players might think they’ve done it now and ease off.
Maybe I’d better get some heart tablets or valium for Sunday phew this was hard enough.

    1. Roy, get yourself a large bottle of single malt and a big glass! Actually once prescribed by my doctor for ‘nerves’ – in the good old days!

  8. Superb. For all the justified criticism over the season, we finally crossed the mental barrier of beating one of the traditional top sides and actually managed the game effectively to the point where outside the Nketiah header we restricted Arsenal to very little in the penalty area. Amazing that it took us 37 games and nearly 11 months to get there but better late than never!

Still we must remain focused. The job isn’t done. West Ham must continue to be treated as a must win – yes it’s in our hands but there can be no sense of relying on favours. Lets keep the concentration and intensity and pull off our very own great escape.

  9. first of i predicted we would survive at start of season by i quote the skin of our teeth. that prediction could well come true.

reading watford page last night and cherries, they were not happy with arsenal watford mostly calling them all names. one fan saying crab footy sideays all night. not troubling villa at all. they say watch them turn up sunday thou to nail our coffin shut.

we still have to finish this season off, but now we are in control of our destiny. i really can not see arsenal dropping three to watford. i think they were off compared to their last two. but lets be fair they played brilliant against two of the best sides in the game. they poured everything into them two games. they were always gonna be flat tonight and we did what we had to do and make it a tough for them to play.

i think a draw would be enough, but can not play for the draw, wrong mindset we need to play exactly as we have last few games. our balance has improved massively. if we had a decent striker we would win games at this level now. we are much more competitive than say before lock-down

i think players like konsa luiz guilbert targget houihane all were decent last night, but one player i would hand the man of match too was mcginn i have seen him getting better each game. but he has been slated loads. but i thought this game and hammers game he would finally hit the hits of last year. he is not quite at that level. but man this guy has recovered from a broken leg and was never gonna regain fitness and form straight away. last night was mcginns best in long time. playing almost in the grealish role behind the front man. he worked his arse off. its not his natural position but he was a threat to arsenal he linked up really well all night with grealish. we finally getting good relationships on the field and finally we looking like a team,

  10. If West Ham lose tonight, then a bore draw would be sufficient for both to stay up on Sunday… Can’t see Watford beating the Gooners. Difficult to call the Bournemouth game…

  11. Nath commented on Watford fans reaction regarding ‘Arsenal not turning up’. I would like to give credit to Smith and the players for the tactical management of the game and the execution of the plans. Smith and all the players were right on it last night and stopped Arsenal from controlling the game.

I also agree with Nath that we are finally beginning to look like a team rather than a collection of individuals – in particular the defensive pairing of Konsa / Mings with Luiz sitting in front of the back four looked really good – Konsa is going to be one very good player. The other thing that struck me was just how much we missed McGinn – not only is he a very good player but he seems to bring the best out of Grealish who looked more like his ‘old self’ last night. Interesting in his post match interview he said he hadn’t felt ‘properly fit’ since returning from lockdown

Finally, an apology to Trezeguet – I was berating him in the Palace game immediately following which he scored and has subsequently made me eat my words.

First clean sheet away on Sunday and a smash and grab goal – perfect!

  12. I for a long time had a goodnight sleep, i dont know why Watford kicking up a fuss they had two reasons against them, one was not to concede 4 goals, the other was too lose. Villa last night restored my love for Aston Villa by winning a crucial game and they did. The way we was last night tactically was one of the best games this season to me proudest moment so far. Vtid.

    1. What a result what a game what a team I’m stuck for words going to be a good ride on the Harley today VTID. Come on the Villa one game to go .

      1. Don’t have a Harley Norman but gave the Porsche a bit of lead this morning – happy days. (Apologies for name dropping 🙂 )

  13. Norman & Hitch – not surprised – there are stretches when no Villa player’s performance has the appeal of Dennis Hopper or Steve McQueen.

Not to be outdone I promised the wife when she hi fived me at the final whistle that today I would get the ’68 280SL out of the garage and take the Old Banger for a spin – in the Merc.

    1. Don’t apologise Norman – we’re all having fun for once this season.

  14. I haven’t got a Harley, Merc, Porsche or anything glamorous unfortunately. I did say to the missus however that if we do stop up, she can have a go on my chopper (bike) 🤔

    1. Why did you add bike Holte – no one believes it’s your bike! -:) no offence meant mate.

  15. West Spam one up at half time – is that good or bad news? WS on a real roll at the moment.

  16. I think a West Ham win would really see their flip flops on on Sunday… We don’t want them in fighting mode!

  17. We could definitely do with West Ham winning tonight.
They look a decidedly good side fwiw.

  18. Man u are struggling, I don’t know how they won 12 games on the trot,

  19. Yep. I’m sure Jared Bowen went off injured too.
    Hopefully, it’s all good.

    1. That’s good news (Bowen) – he’s one of those players that inevitably score against us. Let’s hope West Spam have their sun cream and beach hats on, on Sunday!

I can’t see Watford getting anything at Arsenal (famous last words -:) but Bournemouth could definitely get a result at Everton who might also be one the beach’.

  20. Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on the transfer dealings and whether on reflection it’s been as bad as touted.

Douglas Luiz has been brilliant as the sitting midfielder post lockdown. Since Konsa has moved from right back to centre half he’s been immense. Trezeguet has come good with the goals at the business end of the season and works tirelessly.

Mings I’ll give credit to as he was a real leader last night, but standards had dropped since England call up. Wesley was starting to turn the corner and had a great game at Burnley prior to the injury. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the goals have dried up since then. Heaton a solid keeper with Premier League experience and again unfortunate with injury. Targett has been a bit of a disappointment, lightweight defending but sometimes a threat going forward. Engels had a strong start but tailed off. Nakamba, unspectacular and difficult first season.

That leaves the likes of El Ghazi and Hause who lets face it were signed off the back of last season. So low risk as we know what they’re about, not brilliant but can do a job from time to time. And Jota who Smith knew from Brentford days and has only had cameos.

I’ll ignore the Jan signings as that’s renowned for being a difficult window to deal in. With that being said, are we now only seeing the best of this team as it’s taken this long to gel. Not every signing will work out, but it seems to me that it’s a fairly even split to who’s performed and who hasn’t. I firmly believe that the injuries to big players at key points in the season hampered our momentum and we could quite feasibly have been looking up towards mid table.

I’ll take the claret and blue tinted glasses off now, haha.

  21. pool chelsea game was special game breathe taking forward play by both. i watched the utds too. manure were rubbish and hammers were really on the game. i hope they do not feel the need to sign off with a win. cause if they wanted to make it a match sunday it then would be a hard game game for us. hopefully they will play out a meaningless bore draw. watford won’t win and soton need us to lose and they need to win so fingers crossed..

hey badger i think another poll would see us too sunday. question 50/50 will villa survive ?? i think if we asked that question before arsenal 90 % would have said no.just curious what the percentage is now.

also i am pretty confident now but i still wont say it out loud to mates who keep asking me lol saying it our loud will curse me so iam hush hish but deep down i am confident how are we all ?? feeling honestly
