Villa 0 Newcastle 0

After the build up to our first home game this season it turned out to be a bit of a dampener.

Against a very poor Newcastle team we somehow clawed our way to a 0.0 draw. The thing most of us were looking forward to which is good attacking football, and creativity was again sadly lacking. There was simply no urgency and no ideas. We were totally dominated at home yet again by a mediocre team going nowhere fast.

The first half was pretty even but they had the better chances. As always we still cant play decent for 2 halves as they totally dominated us 2nd half and with a decent striker could have won 2-3.0. The most disappointing thing imo was that we didn’t force one save of their keeper all game.

The negatives: Still no creativity and can only play on the counter. Sendross did ok but looked shaky at times and even the commentators were saying he has a mistake in him. Gabby simply has to go imo does absolutely nothing and he needs a fresh start as much as most of us would like to see the back of him. I feel he holds the team back. Cissoko was decent going forward but caught out quite a bit defensively….sound familiar?

The Positives: Special mention to Hutton who was outstanding for us. What a difference to have a fully committed experienced right back for once, He was everywhere and bust a gut today. All those knocking him just because Mcleish signed him ought to be ashamed of themselves. CNZ did well first half but fizzled out a bit second half though still working his way back to fitness. Vlaar a bit clumsy at times but solid. KR played ok and made a couple of fantastic tackles when it mattered though seemed to run out of steam late on. Westwood was neat and tidy in possession. Carlos, excellent passer and looks the real deal.Guzan great save at the end to keep us in it.

Tactically, Lambert seemed clueless and why take of a striker for a DM. The quicker he goes the better. Team was set up not to lose rather than to win.

All in all a point won but we really should be beating teams like this at home.

He had his opportunity in Serie A and La Liga on loan, do you honestly think he’ll be any better in the Prem?

Unless he can perform like he did at Cagliari, he’d be a really poor signing, and I can’t see him performing like he did at Cagliari.

Thanks for posting the Morley link. I saw also U tube have the ten best Villa goals from 1992-3. So if any younger blogger wonders why the old gits on here moan about how far the entertainment served up by Villa has dropped – go see Saunders and Atkinson at their best. Deano may have lost his pace and dropped a division but he did not lose his brains after Villa. See also “Dean Saunders throw in goal.”

Weather so bad yesterday I watched the whole of the game in 2008 when we thrashed the scum 5-1 Laursen, Mellberg, Petrov, Young, Carew, Bouma etc. What a team that was. Petrov was brilliant; we’ve never replaced him IMHO
