Aston Villa 0-2 West Ham (All Goals) 08… by ourmatch
Oh dear!
This, to me is quite simply a disastrous result.
In the predictions thread, I thought West Ham would stifle the midfield and we’d struggle to break them down.
That was certainly the case in the first half, where the truth is West Ham were the better side.
West Ham, a side that I’ve said on here, are very poor.
So how much does it hurt for me to say we never had a shot on goal in that half?
A lot. So much so that I’m not even going to mention it anymore.
Onto the second half then and straight away, it seemed like we were asleep.
Downing did well to beat Bertrand and it was all too easy for Nolan to score. Just slack.
And within a couple of minutes or so Delph was caught messing with the ball and Nolan scored again. Even slacker.
And then, on came Albrighton, who within 20 seconds had put in a cracking cross, which was better than anything we’d seen in the whole first half.
And the game turned on it’s head.
Benteke, who hadn’t got a sniff was now getting loads of headers, albeit he failed to hit the net and the side looked instantly revitalised.
Why Albrighton doesn’t start is beyond me.
In short, we battered West Ham, but they went a proper 5 at the back and you just knew we wouldn’t get two goals.
The truth is, I don’t really want to talk much about this game, as losing like we did has really got to me today.
I suppose you could say this is what you get when you have a young side, but I’m just glad I didn’t have to pay to watch it.
And where we were a so called safe in 10th, 5 points above relegation, we’re now 11th, 4 points above relegation.
Still think we’re comfortable?
Because I don’t.
Moan of the day?
Even Bertrand can’t take a legal throw-in.
I’ve held my hands up on numerous occasions. I was one of the ans who wanted Lambert in. We got him and I was over the moon. So chuffed I found this blog so I could write about how bright our future was going to be. How I was wrong.
this whole thing turned sour Christmas year before last when we got pummled 8-0 by Chelski. Since then it’s gotten worse and worse, football wise, players bought wise and everything wise. Yes we played some good football under Lambert from time to time but never enough that we’re going to ever get anywhere under his management.
I lost the faith quite a while back now, how some fans are still buying into this regime is fucking criminal. I’m as much of a fan as the next guy, Villa through and through, to question that and say I’m negative when it’s clear to see we’ve become a second rate team is the worst thing of all from a fellow fan.
Spot on md8 the so called supporters who buy into this bollox are probably linked to the club in some way either that or they are complete fuckwits without a brain cell between them.
I think the majority of the still believers fall into the latter sadly mate
Nath pulled out last minute due to weather, mate I’d have gone apeshit under them cameras, streamed it that was bad enough, disgusting game and yes width is what we needed, I will refuse to watch shit again as long as he’s at the club. My neighbour next for who is a West Ham plonker came prancing out side my door, words was piss off.
I forgot, Cardiff will come here expecting a result on Tuesday.
That’s a joke in itself!
Thankfully it’s at Cardiff badger 🙂
Even worse! and I forgot that, but yes; I see your point in that we’re better away.
That’s also a joke.
You won’t win anything without a good home record and ours is worse than everyone’s, Fulham apart.
And their coach is apparently fave for the bullet next.
I’m glad we’re away Badger, but Cardiff is a difficult place to go to. They’ll be well up for it, I’m not confident at all mate.
MDN8, I’ve lost all faith in us beating anyone mate.
Even with the rollercoaster in mind, we’re just poor, imo.
I’ll reassess things and probably put another post up tomorrow 🙂
lol, think we all need bit of time to reflect but it’s been like that all season. I’ve tried to think positive and look at how we might be able improve but it’s useless. We’ve been lucky without playing well this season, the luck will (or has already) dry up. I’m worried for us this season, I really am.
Anyone see Warnocks free kick ffs
kin’ ‘ell what a balls up!
lambert got this one totally wrong imo in the 1st half I could see our tactic for stopping west ham scoring but failed to see wtf we were doing to try nd get a goalourselves, aside from a couple of outside the box efforts from delph and westwood there was absolutely nothing.(and tbf hammer should have scored at least once 1st half)
we start the 2nd half the same, we go 2-0 down with some shambolic defending(pls ron come back quick ffs!)and finally we bring on a winger(albrighton)and go 4-4-2 and we were way the better team, 2 off the woodwork and pinging crosses in all over the place, if bentekes foot was just an inch longer he’d have had two aswell.
so why the fuck did we show a team like west ham(with all due respect)so much respect on our own turf by the way we lined up at the start? we should have been at them from the get go. from the time we went 2-0 down we showed that we could’ve and should’ve won by a country mile.
we were waaay too defensively minded imo. like the arsenal game we didn’t start playing until the last 15 when we scored and from then on arsenal were trying to hang on and if you fancied any team to score it was us.
I think we need to play with a bit more freedom and bravado like we did last season at the run in as I don’t think we’ll go down so we can afford to at least ave a fuckin go from the off not wait until we’re 2-0 down to start playing, seen it too many times this season.
and no one will ever convince me that westwood is a PL player, he’s so make weight but he gets in every match, he’s this seasons bannon.
I said last season when thing s are tough KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid, never a truer word said in football, your capt is out and we know what happens when ron is away don’t we children? so we should go from that point with a simple flat back 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 coz everybody knows how to play this system, simples!
Agree nm.though we were only better when ma come on coz WH retreated into a defensive shell and sat back at 2.0 up. We also started trying to go forward when we had nothing to lose which is always easier. When u think they kept a clean sheet with Collins at the back it makes it even worse. Even with vlaar Wev still only kept one clean sheet in 11 games. Like u say if it wasn’t for those fluky wins we’d be down now.
Read it exactly the same NM. Lambert is turning into McLeish II. I can’t stand this safety first approach to games against ordinary opposition. Why wait until we are two goals behind before going on the offence? Smacks of fear and caution. He needs to grow a pair and have a go from the off. That’s what Liverpool did against Arsenal and blew them away. Granted they are way better than us but it was the positive approach that won them the game.
I’m really getting tired of this. What’s even worse like many others on here what happened is exactly what I expected.
We were outplayed at home by an under strength West Ham who cant pick up a point away from home! Our results this season are nothing short of shocking. Take away two lucky results (Man City and Saints) and we would be in the bottom 3, thrashed in the league cup and knocked out of the FA cup by a div one team!
Im starting to feel the same way now as I did when Mcleish was in charge.
That was shit.
Vaze worse than that, I cannot see anyone siding with Lambert from now on and there’s still some, to me like Markbn8 I said give him time but you can now see he’s no idea of working out tactical play, gets it wrong every game, the man been lucky by being employed by people that knew nothing of football, ie Faulkner, Lerner, we are dire.
Got to agree Bill, think we’ve had it, other teams are stepping up we will go into free fall now.
VTID it’s a crying shame that is come to this, once great club made to be a laughing stock, we should in future look for home grown management and not foreign people thats just in it for the money. We deserve better.
Morning Bill your last comment foreign does that mean if the jocks get full independance Lamberk will need a work permit to work for Villa if so i say give them independance then refuse him a work permit maybe the only way we can get rid of him.
I can’t fathom how fatty faulkner and the board think we are making progress or how lambert deserves an extension, because quite frankly the only case you can make right now is for his P45.
The home record is pathetic, 8 defeats out of 13 at VP and 2 home cup losses, shambolic. But more alarming for me is that we play the same dated, limited tactics every week, hoof the ball up, hope for a knock down. Seeing Grant Holt take to the field when we are 0-2 down just adds to the misery.
I don’t mind rebuilding, taking the knocks and the defeats last season but for what. A season where we have regressed in both quality and style of play. Didn’t Lambert tell Benteke when he signed his new deal that we “wouldn’t be in this position again”. Well we are Paul, and that is down to your shit management and tactics and quite frankly awful business in the transfer market.
We all know funds are limited and Lerner is disinterested, but giving Lambert a new deal would be the biggest pain of all, as it would signal the board are happy with such misery and mediocrity. Is there are more energy sapping and miserable ground in the league as VP right now, apart from the away fans section which celebrates on a weekly basis.
against the better sides we hit more direct, missing the midfield out, u can see this with results against the better teams this is our strength. we play the poorer sides, we change tactics, we try 2 pass the ball which is as foreign to us.
i would like 2 see us get relegated trying 2 win games, rather than going down trying 2 draw games. we all know we can’t pass 4 shit. we are a direct side. play 2 our strengths which is benteke.
cardiff next, the blessing is we are away. which is better cos our tactics are suited better with the opponents attacking us. which they will do.only hope confidence hasn’t ebbed away totally.
at home albrighton needs 2 play, we need a focus point which is benteke u hit long and u get the ball 2 albighton who feeds benteke and gabby is on the left doing same. delph westwood holding, hopefully gardner plays attacking midfield role. we are running out of excuses, confidence is key we need a win and quickly
It was refreshing to hear Lambert making his feelings known after the match about the poor defending that basically threw the game away, rather than his usual “couldn’t fault the lads for effort” comments.
the onlt bright thing about yesterday was albrightons performance.
I really think we need to stick to a 4-4-2/4-4-1, playing baccuna in the AM ‘number 10’ position is no good, he’s just not good enough to play a roll that important not really blaming baccuna here, he’s very young and has a lot to learn its asking a lot of the lad to take that kind of pressure and responsibility.
and id rather see KEA in instead of westwood, in fact id rather see the ballboy get a game ahead of westwood.
also lowton looked poor again today, he was being skinned by Jarvis all the 1st half and he(lowton)looked so slow, I mean you’ve got to be to make Jarvis look like a world beater, has lowton always lacked pace? it may explain why he is constantly found out of position.
totally agree with the ballboy lmao westwood needs 2 stand up and be counted so many times he passes sideways or backwards, but this is always a criticism u point at the whole team. no other team relies on the goalkeeper booting the ball long,
they need 2 work on movement creating spaces offering more options 4 the man on the ball
OK Badger you want some analysis of what is going wrong. Here is wee bit of elementary coaching. Who knows Lambert might even read it? I will do “how to break down a packed defence in another post.” But for now–
What Delph is doing wrong. The back four in the absence of Vlaar do not trust the accuracy of a long pass forward so they play it square at the back, until Delph comes into the back line to pick the ball up. This is the key point because as soon as he does that opponents gang up on him as fast as possible. They know he is arrogant enough to think he can play his way out of trouble, but in that position there is no cover between him and the goal. When Delph loses possession (eg to Nolan) it is a goal. Opposing managers do specifically coach this – I’ve been told so by Frank Lampard and Shane Long so I believe it. The situation for this typically occurs when we are facing a team intent on defending with two rows of four ie against poor sides at Villa Park. By contrast when the opposition is attacking us our back four cannot dither on the ball and wait for Delph. They hoof the ball upfield pronto to relieve pressure, with or without accuracy.
I see where your coming from O,L,L, Delf to me will never be in the same league as Gerrard, or Lampard, he’s to irrational with his game, he’s does try hard and its why he has so many cards, and yes every manager knows how to play us just close him down. I’ll say this till he’s out of Villa Park Lambert has not a clue what to do, his coaches are clueless we get caught on ever tactical line up we make. I’m worried now and have been for years how as to why we are not moving forwards.
