Villa 0 – 0 Southampton; A point that saves Lambert’s neck?

I think many of us would have taken a point today and even I managed to predict this one, although I said it would be one each.
There were suggestions that Southampton might already have their holiday heads on, but I never agreed with that point of view and indeed Southampton came out much the better side and looking much the bigger threat for the first half hour or so.
We came back into it quite well though and were actually the better side for around ten minutes in the latter part of the first half.

We also started the second half brightly, although I always felt that our opponents looked the best bet to score.
Despite Marc Albrighton putting in some cracking crosses yet again, I never really got the feeling that we’d put one away, whereas I always felt Southampton might.
Which is why I actually agreed with Grant Holt coming on today.
I don’t feel he added much, but it was the right call in my opinion.

Talking points?

Well, they had a decent penalty call for handball with Bertrand being the one involved, but I never like those ones, where you’re only a couple of feet away when the ball is hit.
You don’t get a chance to move away and given that I like to think of myself as very honest, I’m going to agree with the ref not giving it.

The best talking point for me though was Callum Robinson getting a few minutes.
It’s about time the kids got a look in, even though I’m not madly convinced they’re good enough.
The point is, if we don’t give them a go, we’ll never know will we?
He certainly got involved in the few minutes he was on the pitch, so I’d say he deserves another go.

Was his appearance down to Lambert or Cowans though?
The cynic in me thinks it might indeed have been down to Lambert, but only after he’s been told by Lerner or Faulkner to get at least one of the kids on just to appease one of the fan’s biggest criticisms of the manager.

I can’t say it was a bad performance by the lads today. They all worked hard and at the end of the day we got a much needed point.
I’m still wondering where the goals are coming from without Benteke.

But I very much suspect that might be the point that saves us from the drop and possibly more importantly Lambert’s neck.
Which is why I don’t know how to feel today.

While of course, I’m glad of the point, I also want Lambert gone as I simply don’t trust him to deliver anymore.

I suspect many of you may feel the same.
