Transfer window thoughts; encouraging.

I’m bored.
Bored with the lack of footy action and bored with all the rumours I keep reading, where I know 99% of them are at best pure conjecture and at worst complete rubbish.

That said, at least some of our latest rumoured targets are worth reading about.

Idrissa Gueye, seems a useful sort of player, in that he’s a holding midfielder type, who’s apparently beginning to get forward more and have the occasional crack at goal.
I have to admit that he sounds similar to the type of player Fabian Delph was supposed to be when we signed him (as a box to box type) and you have to wonder if he’s going to play with Delph or instead of him?
I don’t really have a clue on that, but if they are to play together, the thought of one marauding forward and the other protecting the defence, with them interchanging, definitely appeals, to me anyway.
I like the thought of Gueye and it’s seemingly a done deal, with him having signed for a fee of £9 million and awaiting a work permit.
Which reminds me. It had previously been suggested that he’s been living in France since he was young, which I would have thought means he’s a naturalised Frenchman. Now I’m not convinced that’s the case.

Going back to the “complete rubbish” comment, this is where Delph comes into it.
Even if we assume that the rumoured £10 or even £8 million buyout clause is true, there is no way, in my opinion that Delph will be going anywhere for that kind of money.
The latest rumours I’m reading are that he’s Manchester City bound, with a wage of £100,000 a week.
That’s all well and good (for the player) and depending on what type of buyout clause it is, the club would probably be obliged to let Delph talk to City.
But surely you would expect another club to come in and match that sort of money?
Maybe not the wages, but at least the £8 or 10 million?
It’s a steal for an England midfielder, after all, even if some of us don’t particularly rate him?
That’s where the confusion kicks in, as I’d expect the club to be more interested in any higher bid.
Who gets preference in a case like that, is beyond me, but I’d suspect it would come down to yet another sort of deal, between the buying club, Delph and the Villa.
Suffice to say, I don’t think he’ll be leaving that cheaply.
But who knows?
I’m not even convinced Delph would want to shine his backside and be another Milner, at City, but it seems Begovic is happy to do just that at Chelsea, so again, who knows?

What else?

Ah yes, we’ve apparently tabled a £9 million bid for Nice left back Jordan Amavi.
He’s supposed to be a very good player who most importantly for me, defends as well as he gets forward.
I’ve previously said I think this is at least one of the most important positions we need to look at and if we were to get him, I’d actually be a bit excited.
We supposedly face competition for his signature from Arsenal and Southampton, which is very encouraging, as the latter club in particular have a brilliant recent record in signing players.

And there’s another midfielder, in Anderlecht’s Dennis Praet.
I’m not so convinced about this one, as he’s an attacking midfielder.
What he has over Carlos Gil, I’m not sure, but it’s £10 million we’re talking about, so you would expect he has something about him.

I’ve spoken to a couple of Villa fans at work and they’ve both expressed a slight concern that we’re not being linked to strikers, but that’s most likely to be down to what happens with Benteke, in my opinion.
Which is a situation, where I genuinely think the club don’t know what’s going on.

Hence it would appear that the club are willing to spend money regardless.
I know I’ve had the arguments that the club will spend money whatever the situation of the takeover is, but I’m not at all convinced.

It seems to me the club are going to spend proper money in this window and it isn’t coming from Randy Lerner.
It’s then logical to suggest that the takeover is probably a lot closer than we think.
That’s pure conjecture on my part though.

Hey, if the papers can do it, surely I can?

Whatever, I’m liking the players we’re being linked too and am encouraged.

Pisses me off how most of the reporters refer to Sherwood as “Former Spurs Manager” . He was in the job for six months. He will be at villa longer soon enough yet the will still refer to him the same.

My assumption is by saying “Former Spurs Manager” they increase their web traffic. I doubt it is a conspiracy against the club.

Correct if they mention Spurs and Sherwood in the same headline then that goes on the Spurs news now and villa Newsnow. For example when we were on it and headline said for example villa v Man Utd it would show up in its and villa NN. This we ended up with more site traffic as Utd fans would click through.

From what I read Delph will not be at tomorrows kit reveal, surely he is off… no? He won some respect back from me last season, but I’m afraid I am just not as sold on his loyalty to the club as some.

After so many promising players have ruined their careers at the “top 4” clubs you would think eventually the pendulum would start drifting back to sanity, but you’re right – the lure of money dictates all. I’m surprised more footballers just don’t play the lotto, they might have better luck.

    DSVilla July 6, 2015 at 9:28 pm . Reply

There is no loyalty in football. It’s a results and money business. Managers get fired without being given time to turn things around, or complete their plan for a team. Players have a short career, and want to maximise their earnings and chances of winning trophies/honours. most football fans support a team because of geography and family tradition. It is unrealistic to expect the players to feel the same when the club will buy the best players they can afford from anywhere.

I don’t really care who we sell, and that includes Benteke and Delph. What is important is that we invest the cash we receive to leave the team/squad in a better place. It has always happened at Villa, and in that we are no different that most other clubs.

Can I blame a player like Benteke for wanting better than an annual relegation struggle at a wage well below what he could command elsewhere? Nope. Hurts all the same, but the secret is to make the club an attractive place to be. We are a long way from that.

DSVilla, a very sensible comment, we was lucky to have had Benteke, we also lucky to have Delph, if they choose to move on there nothing we can do, gone are the players except the likes of Gerrard, Abonglahor, that play for that shirt, let them go , we can only look and watch if they did the right thing, money as they say is the route to all evil. I wish them well.

The idea that Delph would go to Man City seems particularly odd. Yes they have a need for British players, but Delph is nowhere near good enough for a team with designs on the Prem title and Champs League as well. He would just replace Milner as a bit part player. Benteke on the other hand will probably thrive in a top 6 team. As long as we get £32.5M and spend it well that’s probably OK.

French are reporting villa are close to securing Amavi. Nice have happily accepted the bid saying it’s too good to turn down. However it seems the deal has not yet been made with Amavi and Sherwood and the villa staff have a lot to iron out and some convincing to do.

Yes it’s the not knowing that’s becoming boring. Anyway Benteke stayed and helped dig us out of a big hole so no hard feelings if he goes.

Just hope that if Benteke does go that the 32.5 million is new money and isn’t already being spent on Gueye and Amavi etc

The problem remains that no one knows what the hell is going on. The Liverpool Press (Echo etc) have questioned whether Liverpool will be paying the release fee for Benteke as was reported in The Express and The Star. Benteke hasn’t said anything – last time he did he pussied out and signed a new deal after meeting with uber-salesman Paul Lambert. In comparison, Sherwood could get him to sign 10 years!!!!

With regard to Delph, if there is a £10m release fee as originally reported, it’s now miraculously dropped to a reported £8m?? Also, why hasn’t anyone dived in and offered it?? Surely £8m is an absolute snip, and it’s not like the club could even turn it down.

To remove all doubt Villa should put bidding / selling deadlines in place like they brilliantly did with Gareth Barry and Liverpool (replacement for Xabi Alonso indeed!)

    Still think they’ll both stay.

Has Vlaar signed for anyone yet? Useless Tw@t.

“The Express” and “The Star” – all you need to know, really!

Then again, maybe the bin dippers are only waiting for the £50m they’re supposed to be getting from Citeh for Sterling before launching a bid for Benteke?

As you say, the absence of clubs trying to sign Delph is a bit strange if he’s actually available for £8-10m.

It’s only Europa League and Champions League sides. United, Arsenal and Chelsea won’t try signing him. I doubt City actually are either. So that leaves Spurs, Liverpool and Southampton. Can rule Southampton out. So it’s between Spurs and Pool who could try getting him, though I don’t think he’d leave us for either of them.

Might be because Delph isn’t that good. Taking my villa goggles off if I supported another team I wouldn’t exactly be overwhelmed Delph was coming. £8 m is about right though we get bk the money we paid for him. For me he’s never really fulfilled full potential

£10M is cheap for Delph the England international, but too much for Delph the cup finalist. If there is a lack of interest it is probably because the technical guys at potential buyers are screaming at the Gaffer that he is a very risky buy.

Nail on head OLL. If it’s £8m and he goes to Citeh it will be to comply with number of English players and he will become a star bench polisher.

Can’t see Delph going somehow. If he stayed on under Lambert why wouldn’t give Tim a go. He’ll be really someone in the new set up, captain and a player who has proved his loyalty. As you say he’ll be no-one at Citeh.

He’s also getting regular England appearances which he obviously relishes. That also would go out of the window if he isn’t getting enough PL games as a starter.

All in all still feeling positive at the standard of player Tim is aiming for. Just finding the waiting while it all happens a bit tedious.

        Roll on the new season.
