This was another game that I didn’t get to watch because of work, so I can’t comment on the match, but by the sounds of it, it was probably a good one to miss.
Having had a very quick glance around, it seems that the defensive part of the side had a total shocker and this wasn’t helped by some very gung-ho tactics that didn’t get changed, at least in the first half.
I had a quick look for the score after about twenty minutes of the game and was stunned to see that we’d conceded a hat-trick in just three minutes. At any level you care to mention, that is absolutely awful and I find myself wondering what on earth happened?

Still, with me not having seen the game, I’m not in a position to comment, so I won’t.
Hence this one is about the positive side of things.
While it’s easy to rant and rave after a bad performance, we have to bear in mind that the players who lost today have done pretty well over the last few weeks.
Whether today was a result of a side that was over-confident, I really can’t say, but I was talking to a workmate earlier today and his opinion was that Southampton were about due to give someone a thrashing. He certainly called that one right.
So what’s the good news?
As we all know we’re safe, which at the moment is the main thing.
And Benteke scored again, albeit an absolute token gesture goal. It could have been worse, in that we might have got none at all, is the point. I suspect I’m perhaps clutching at straws there, to be honest.
Ok, it’s scant consolation and doesn’t bode particularly well for the run-up to the cup final, especially when we face a tough Burnley side, who although relegated, will not lay down and die for us.
But Sherwood said we’d win some and lose some. The problem is I didn’t see a 6-1 whupping being part of that.
While today is very disappointing, there may be something good to come out of it.
There’s no way we will be complacent against Arsenal in the final, after this result.
One thing that everyone seems to be overlooking is Shay Given, he really worries me. He’s weak at corners, get’s easily bullied by defenders, is not the tallest…or youngest, and maybe because of his age he doesn’t seem capable of pulling off the odd spectacular save that Guzan can. Given was close to being a great when he was younger, but I fear those days have gone. I for one would be much happier to see Guzan line up in the final than Given, hope Sherwood feels the same way.

Watched the game yesterday from sunny Bulgaria, which was an utter shambles, very embarrassing, the players should be ashamed of themselves. The managers comments after the game summed it up when he said the whole playing and coaching staff plus management let the club down. It would be a nice gesture if all staff and players donated their weeks wages each to ACORNS because they certainly did not earn it. I hope this gets some air time and the pressure is put on them as it is a small snip-it from their vast wealth.
At least we stay in the PL….thanks to the rest of the results.

Villa’s do have a worrying predisposition to fall apart at times but that’s something that Tim can sort out in the close season now that WE’RE SAFE!!!!!
Sorry still can’t quite believe it.
Looking for improvement next season but interestingly, even if there was none, if we beat Burnley next week we’ll have notched up 19 points in 13 games. Over a season that works out as a total of 56 points and would put us around 9th. So if we’re going to improve we should do even better than that next season.
3 points next week so we end up with 40+ and a Cup win would do me nicely.
Next season we’ll still be in the PL, some deadwood gone and new blood in, and possibly even have European football. Who would have said that 13 games ago? Well done Tim and the lads.

Well said Pat. What Tim has done with that group of players is amazing. We were sleep walking towards relegation and he turned things around. I expected us to get a hammering along the way and it finally happened. Shit happens, but as you say his points to game ratio is not bad given the players he has had to work with. We must remember that Tim has NEVER had the oportunity to build his own team at Spuds or Villa. Will be an interesting Summer. Let’s sit back and enjoy the ride and see what we can do.

Pat/Steve/Tekkers….all fair and valid points. Having rewatched yesterdays game I felt that it was a classical ‘pre Cup Final’ performance where players were reluctant to put in ‘proper tackles’ for fear of injury. That does not excuse a bad display, but I didnt notice any full bloodied tackles as you would expect to see from the current Villa team under Tim….the fact that Hutton didnt get his customary yellow card sums the display up perfectly for me!……were they under instruction to take it easier…just asking? Probably be a completely different team against Burnley!

Learn to read you negative berk…..i said it was a bad performance! There were definately no tackles that you would normally expect to see. Tim knew we were virtually safe so who knows what the instructions were?…..Its simply what I observed after watching the full game twice (yes I am mad and sadistic). ……oohah, this is for you!

ok were safe but the big issue now is a massive cup final against a superior arsenal and if we are to beat them the squad has to be at its best end of.
so to lose in that manner is bad in more than one way.
1) look at how we have dealt with bad defeats in the past.
2) arsenal have been shown our weaknesses and will look to expose them again.
so please dont say sherwood wont let this happen even as much as i like him, we went 3 down and never changed a thing when everyone could see a hammering plus since hes been here he hasnt patched things up in games when needed – man city qpr as examples.

going into the last 2 games and a final players should be looking to impress and keep things neat and tidy.
as much as tim has done his job he is too guns blazing especialy with a poor squad that we have.
the best way forward is to turn burnley over with a clean sheet with no injuries and suspensions but i know what were like.
Agree Andy no excuse conceding 3 goals in less than 3 mins. Even Lamberk would be proud of that record. Like you say I expected us to lose maybe 2.1 that’s fair enough but the team were a shambles. People on here saying it’s only game said the same when we lost 8.0 to Chelsea.

Can’t believe the comments. It’s only thanks to Tim that we’ve got a Cup final to look forward to and you’re moaning about it!. If we’re all going to be absolutely honest we’d probably say that Arsenal are nailed on favourites especially after yesterday’s display.
And yet it’s one match on one day and we all know Villa can play much better than that. So come on and let’s enjoy being at Wembley win or lose. After all we have next season to look forward to and that’s something none of us have been able to say for quite a few years.

here here Pat. There are some people on here who i am sure would prefer us to lose the cup final so they can just have a go Sherwood or for that matter anybody.
If Villa win the cup against massive favourites Arsenal i for one will nominate Sherwood for a Knighthood.
For the first time in years i look forward to going to villa park to see a good game of football and isn’t that what its supposed to be about win, lose or draw.

Regarding keepers, am I the only one thinking Vorm would be great for us? He’s always been a good keeper in my opinion, and he’s definitely an upgrade on our current choices. Not to mention he hasn’t got a look in at Spurs so he could be tempted.
I mentioned Vorm previously, but general consensus seemed to be that he was useless. That’s not me recollection of him at Swansea where I thought he was class.

I actually don’t know about Vorm he is like a younger Given, I don’t think he would be a massive step up. he is an excellent shot stopper but he has weaknesses to his game too.
I remember seeing him have outstanding displays for swansea, but still remember thinking he could have done better for some simpler saves.
I think if we want to upgrade the keeper, we should pick an up and comer like some mentioned here, or give Steer a chance no? he hasn’t really got a proper go yet in my opinion.
Playing a high line against a team with southamptons pace was suicide ,the positive being tim will know hes made that mistake and will not do it against arsenal.After the hull away game i could not see us scoring another goal never mind get another point tim has done wonders and i so dream of us winning the fa cup imagine the homecoming, starved of success for years then coming home with the F A CUP the city would be bouncing .
My word I do love people’s arguments on here. “Oh people are in denial, we lost 6-1 how can you be happy about the result”. I swear reading comprehension for some has gone out the window to make their made up arguments just to be negative. No one once said they were happy about it, it was a good result, etc. People claimed it didn’t matter, because we are safe, and that’s all that matters. No one’s claiming we shouldn’t have ambition, but we’re safe, so the 6-1 loss does not matter as we can no longer go down. I can honestly say not a single fan is happy about the result. Good grief the neg heads love making up things on here just to make an awful argument that’s 99% of the time baseless.
Just wanted to say how relieved I am that this season is over and we somehow managed to scrape survival! It’s been one of the worst seasons I can remember as a Villa fan. This brief spell under Sherwood has at least added a rare bit of excitement. However, the Southampton game was as bad as anything under Lambert. It was embarrasing!
But well done to Tim for keeping us up, as Lambert would have had no chance.
