Sod the league cup, when are we going to get a Striker in?

So all the talk is about the cups.
We played the backup team and they were frankly rubbish against Fulham, to my mind.

The debate continues about if the players are simply out of form or just poor, but that’s not what this post is about.

My question now, is why haven’t we got any players in yet?

The main area of concern is obviously in the striking department.
We have Wesley, Kodjia and Davis as our only realistic options.
Let’s take a look at them;

You’d have to be extremely optimistic to say that Wesley has performed well and looks like a player who will get us more than 10 goals this season. Either our system doesn’t suit him or he just isn’t good enough.
To be honest, he doesn’t look anything like a finisher to me at all, but I’m very possibly being unfair.
I think expecting him to produce the goods this season is just too big an ask.
He’s playing a different game, in a different country and needs time to learn. Then add in that he has massive expectation on his shoulders.
My hope is that he’ll come good next season, but we should have been looking for someone else to come in as backup, on the first day of the window.
And now he’s out for the season, it’s even more important that we replace him.

Jonathan Kodjia.
Well, he’s Marmite isn’t he?
I like him, because he offers something different in my opinion.
Yes, I get it: he never looks up and doesn’t pass to the obvious choice. He’s a greedy so and so, who is bone idle, to boot.
But he can get goals.
My opinion here doesn’t really matter though, because recently he’s looked shattered and it’s like he’s running through treacle, probably through a lack of games.
Which is why my opinion has been for a good while that he wants out. He’s after that last big payday, for which I don’t really blame him.
It would seem we’ve denied him that opportunity early in the season and keeping a player in that state of mind just doesn’t bode well.
Keeping him until the end of the season just shouldn’t have been an option, but I suspect we now don’t have a choice.

And then there’s Kienan Davis.
I like this kid.
He holds the ball up and can introduce others into the game, which I suspect is what Dean Smith wants.
But that alone is not good enough.
We need someone who does that and scores goals too. Kienan just doesn’t do this, although he might start to do so in the future.
Whatever, I don’t feel he’s the answer just yet.

So what do I think?
The fact that we never got a Striker in on the 1st of January tells me we were going to go with what we had before the current state of play.
That’s a big concern, because if the Hierarchy thought that would be good enough, I think they’re seriously deluded.
And I don’t believe they’re that stupid.

Which tells me that we are seriously bound by FFP rules or they just don’t want to spend massively on what’s available.

Scott Hogan, who can’t even do it at Stoke? If Smith seriously rated him, with the players we have, why did he loan him out for the season?
Glenn Murray?
Adebayour? What would his wage demands be?
These links are just a joke and will not happen.

But you would think we’d have sounded out someone and his club months ago.

I suspect we’re only now looking around in a mad panic and are going to have our pants pulled down on either a well past it, massively overpaid or another unproven foreign player.

Which is ridiculous and frankly bloody worrying.
That’s if we get anyone in at all.

Am I seeing too much into things?
Possibly.
But I seriously expected someone in on New year’s day.

Rumour has it that Pepe Reina is close to signing an 18 month deal with Villa according to reports Italian press.

Now Reina is 37 but then wasn’t that about Friedel’s age when he joined us?

Not sure what to make of this tbh.

We need a short term fix so makes sense with Steer due back in a couple of months. I would have him as cover for Nyland who deserves an opportunity to hold onto first team place. Also I hope they will offload Kalinic otherwise totally pointless bringing in anyone.
Jay Rodriguez has been muted which is laughable for so many reasons. Please Dean Smith announce Mitrovic who is by far the best of all names mentioned.
As for tonight I think if we play same formation as Burnley then I will predict 2-0 to Leicester. If he goes with the failing 4-3-3 I predict a 4-0 defeat.

i do not like this line up. they gone three at the back. horses for courses just because it worked at burnley doesn’t mean it will work against countering team who are fast. no kodjia that might even things up. how to beat Leicester. you have to counter the counters.looks like we will have trez grealish and el ghazi probably interchanging the forward position. so hopefully we will have pace to break on the foxes. defenders will have to communicate brilliantly as they will be not marking anybody but picking up plenty runners,
