Aston Villa have announced that they have offered Ron Vlaar a new contract to stay at the club. Bent and Stevens were among the first team players who were released yesterday with Herd given a second chance to impress Sherwood in pre-season. However Vlaar has stated:
“I want to maximise my career and I think I can go a step higher.
“I will look at it and go quietly.”
He appears to highlight the fact that he believes that he can play for a better club than Aston Villa and is keeping his options open prior to signing a new contract at Aston Villa. Vlaar joined Villa in 2012 and since then has consistently featured in Aston Villa’s defence. It appears as though Sherwood is monitoring the situation with Pogba’s brother Florentin Pogba who plays as a centre-back for Saint-Étienne.
However losing Vlaar would be a blow with Cleverly deciding to jump ship to Everton and Benteke’s future still hanging in the balance.
It appears as though Villa’s defence will have a shake up, with Senderos and reportedly Baker not being wanted by Sherwood as the club prepares for a load of sales. I’d personally like to see Vlaar stay for another season or two, simply because he adds stability to the back-four despite what other fans may think, I genuinely believe that Vlaar makes our defence stronger.
