Bill Pearson asks some pertinent questions;
Can anyone explain our methods of choosing potential players for the first team?
Are our reserves only being trained for the shop window with the pure aim being for them to be sold on?
And why don’t we get club news about young footballers? It seems that Aston Villa just take an attitude in purchasing players trying to get in the big time and are not interested in promoting from the reserves.
It looks to me that our academy is a selling idea by the club rather than a place to further our first team in league matches, cups and European games.
This is not the way the fans want it. We need to get the club back as a massive Midland footballing club.
The Birmingham Mail and Birmingham City Council etc should take a good look at what Villa are up too, from the Mail’s point of view in supposedly supporting Midland clubs and from Birmingham Council’s view in generated funds to our city and promotion to the world in the name of football.
It’s been said that Doug Ellis is to blame with regards to the sale to the American Moneyball yank.
That sale has put Villa in a bad light; it will take this club years to get back to where it should be in Britain’s second city that’s supposedly trying to stay in contention with other cities.
I feel sorry for our younger generation that will miss any good times from Villa because of bad boardroom decisions in moving our club forwards.

An interesting read. Im too young to remember this season (in fact the first season I remember was when we finished 2nd behind Liverpool) but seems eerily similar to whats happening now….at least we bounced back quick though!

The great experience us older fans had (I’m 67) was the ride up from Div 3. You have to go down there to experience it, and there was a continuity all the way to Rotterdam. Not a moneybags from heaven transformation that Chelsea and Citeh had, or always one rung short like Arsenal. The nearest to it since is Bournemouth, from passing the buckets round Dean Court to save the club – to beating Chelsea and Manure in one week, with much of the same team.
Rotterdam was a turning point for the London Lions, marriage and kids came next for a lot of them because they sensed it was the end of a journey. There was a big change of membership for the following season but 3 of us said “Lets go to Japan” for the World Club game and we did, but that really was the end of the pier. We thought then we would never be as good again. In terms of the quality the Dean Saunders Dalian Atkinson team was even better, but the opposition was also tougher so we did not win the League.
