This week there has been tons of juicy Villa news for fans to read. Does Randy Lerner want to sell the club? Will Gardner earn a new contract and N’Zogbia and Okore are nearing a return from their injuries. But the one piece of news which has really stood out is Paul Lambert receiving a new contract. It’s going to happen, the deal is in the pipelines and Lambert’s new three-year contract will bring the end of the ‘transitional period’ that Villa have suffered throughout the last few seasons.
“I speak to Randy a lot, and things like that (a new contract) will take care of itself,” said Lambert.
“But I’m sure the discussions between me and the chairman will be the same as they’ve always been. They’ll be pleasant, with no problems either way whatsoever.”
“They (Lerner and Faulkner) see the vision and what’s happened,” added the Scot.
“They see the work that has been going on behind the scenes, to have that vision of what you want to do.
“If you have that vision, you need people seeing it and backing it, and Randy has been fantastic with that.
“He knows what’s happened, and he knows the way we want to go, and as I said, he’s backed it and been excellent.”
When Paul Lambert joined the club in 2012, his initial contract was pretty straight forward. Build a new team with young players on lower transfer fees and lower wages. This would ultimately push out all the high earners in the Villa squad. Richard Dunne, Stephen Ireland and Stephen Warnock have all been solid or released, saving Villa millions on wages per-season. Throughout Lambert’s reign the highest transfer paid was Benteke and Libor Kozak which both cost £7 million. In total Lambert has spent roughly £40 million on transfer fees over the last two seasons. Despite signing unknown players the likes of Vlaar, Benteke, Westwood, Lowton and Bacuna have become very good players for Aston Villa. Lambert has also managed to get the best out of Fabian Delph, Brad Guzan and Gabby Agbonlahor. Teams around us have been spending millions this year in an effort to avoid relegation. Villa deciding to do otherwise, this decision has ultimately help Villa nearly clearing it’s debt.
The transitional period will end at the end of this season. Surely Lambert’s goal/objective for this season has been to finish mid-tbale. Villa can’t be dragged into the relegation battle as it’s one of the most intense in years and fans would want to avoid a third year flirting with relegation. But more importantly the fans want to see progress under Paul Lambert and his ‘new’ team. Surely a mid-table finish would demonstrate the improvement of the Villa side.
Paul Lambert’s new contract will allow the club to change up a gear and spend more money on more quality players. Mat Kendrick reckons that Aston Villa will be willing to sign a player or two valued at 10 million euros in the summer. This money will most likely be spent on a quality attacking midfielder. Now that Lambert has added quantity to his side he can now focus on quality, which is surely what’s going to happen this summer.
Aston Villa’s sponsorships are growing at a rapid pace, the clubs name its being recognised internationally more each year. The club is heading in the right direction, whether or not you support Lerner. It’s been a tough few seasons, believe me it frustrates me see our previous rivals of Everton and Tottenham battling for a Champions League place this season. But Villa finally have all the pieces of the puzzle to seriously push on and challenge for trophies and a place in the Europa League.

In all fairness, things have appeared static on the pitch, but we’ve been hearing for ages now about business deals behind the scenes. Faulkner has been slated for that but with financial fair play, that’s where villa are doing well. From now clubs will only be able to spend if the books are balanced which, as I said, these lower wages and business deals are working towards. I think the difference between your vision and theirs is short term expectations and actual knowledge of the club’s finances and how the new rules will work for us. You’re entitled to your opinion, and I’m not claiming to be some kind of sage here, but too many people aren’t looking at the bigger picture here

We’d have ended 8th last season and that’s 7 points more than we had last season. A bit more than just a few points and a few spots. But that’s a lot of ifs as Villa earned 21 points in their last 14 games.

Also true Swansea and the likes have been chucking money around like confetti and as QPR showed last season if not spent wisely it can be to no avail.
I also agree with the Lerner philosophy of bringing players on low wages (£10k a week, just how do they cope?) and them having to earn the right to a bigger better pay day, it makes sense and a refreshing change.
As for Everton / The Spuds qualifying for the champions league we’ll see but I wouldn’t put my mortgage on it.

id agree bws, everton are doing brilliant this season although I expect the wheels to start coming off soon, reckon they will end up outside the top 4 by the end of the season. I also may expect them to struggle next season by comparison as 3 of their current starting line up at the moment aren’t actually everton players and will be gone come next season and with evertons spending power they will be difficult to replace.
as for spurs considering the money they’ve spent a CL place is a must, again I cant see this happening, they cant seem to beat any of the teams around them, top four/6. possibly 120million for a Europa spot, oh dear 😀

The end of the transitional period was this season when he (Lambert) established a first team (for this season) all of his own signings and all remaining high earners from previous managers were thrown into the “bomb squad”.
Our football is worse this year and we have added zero quality to an already zero quality team, considering Benteke is not at full pace. The only reason we are where we are in the table is because it’s the worst PL season I’ve ever witnessed, it’s a totally dire season to follow and the teams below us are absolute shite bar Swansea, and we’re still not clear of them by a long chalk.
Lose tomorrow, or even draw tbh and we’re firmly back in the relegation scrap (we kind of are already). I wish we were away tomorrow in all honesty. Wet Spam will come and put 11 bodies behind the ball and ‘park the bus’ and play counter and I can see them nicking a win.
Tomorrows game is the biggest game of the season for us so far, 3 points is a must.

Don’t get me wrong – most of the football we’ve seen from Villa this season has been shocking, but I don’t think we’re too many signings away from having a good side. The ones I would keep from the current set up are:
Guzan
Bacuna Okore Vlaar Bertrand
Delph ????
????
Agbonlahor Weimann
Benteke
6 of those players were signed by Lambert (if you count re-signing Guzan and Bertrand on loan). Don’t really think Bacuna is a right back, but hasn’t really been given a decent shot in the attacking midfield role yet. Albrighton has also looked good when he’s played, but would be better employed in a 4-4-2 system with wingers. Weimann has been disappointing, but he does have pace and is a good finisher. Might be better off playing him as a central attacker rather than a wide player.
Others that could still come good are – Lowton, Westwood, Sylla, N’Zogbia. Haven’t really seen Helenius or Gardner. Kozak didn’t blow my mind, but his goal ratio was pretty good.
Have been most disappointed with Baker, Luna and Clark this season. Clark has improved quite a bit from last season though, where he was simply a liability. Baker has gone down hill massively, but possibly still has potential. El Ahmadi I’m still not convinced about, but he has also improved this season.
I do think there is a platform there to build from. Is Lambert the right person to do this? I’m going to take a lot more convincing yet, as some of his tactics have been woeful.
However, if we can get Okore back fit and on form, sign Bertrand and possibly a solid right back, bring in a decent holding midfielder with a bit of physicality and an attacking midfielder with a bit of flair, I think we’d have a good looking side.
Benteke, and bertrand wont be here though and vlaar and okore are injury prone
even if the post is correct we will just be spending to get maybe 8th every season if that. Do we really want the cesspit that is Chumps league minor which for English clubs destroys their season ? (Ask fulham, swansea and Newcastle) as the squad is never big enough.
If Lerner spends it will be £20M again but say on 2/3 players but that only gets you a 8-10th position, have the ambitions fell THAT low that people are happy with an Owner like that ?
