Forest 2 – 0 Villa; Normal service resumed

You have to laugh, don’t you?
Just as things were looking good, so we go and lose to a team that on paper suggests that we shouldn’t have.
I think it might have been the God Clough who first said we don’t play on paper and whoever it was, was totally correct, as proved today.
I have to hand it to Forest, they were incredibly well disciplined and totally frustrated us.

You know things aren’t going your way when we have so many players that looked anonymous.
John McGinn is one and Diaby was another. While they’ve been great this season, neither hardly had a look in. Watkins was another, but even when he did have chances, well I don’t know if he was just rubbish or it was just one of those days.
It’s incredibly difficult to criticise players when they’ve done so well previously and I don’t think I’m going too.
I predicted that we’d win this 2-1, but had a feeling that it would be a really tough game and so it proved.
One of the commentators suggested this was the best Forest have performed this season and I found myself thinking “how many times have we heard that before?”

Make no mistake about this. For all our possession and corners, Forest were by far the better side today and it was something I felt as early as 10 minutes into the game.
I’m not happy, but sometimes you just have to say we were beaten by a side that quite simply outperformed us.
I do have one complaint though.
Since when were two handed pushes in the back okay? Right in front of the ref too on one occasion.

Oh well, onwards and upwards. As my missus has just said.
You can’t win ’em all.

AZ getting more confidence – don’t like the way this is going.

Looking more like our (poor) performance on Sunday against a low block.

    1. Agreed, Hitch…

WTF was that first half? Emery does not have a plan B for massed defences. The selection out there has not got a powerful, accurate shot from 20+ yards between them – but that is where the chances lie unless AZ gift one by a muddle, though they have come close.

Our offside goal – no way! The ball is deliberately played out of the box towards him by a defender, it did not deflect off the defender.

    Cavalry needed.

VAR enjoying their power to re-referee games rather than looking at ‘clear and obvious errors’.

That was a very technical and borderline decision – certainly not a clear error.

  4. Started well but AZ growing in confidence and finished most likely to score. Bring Luiz on for either Kamara or Tielemans.

  5. So slllllloooowwwwww. Is Gerrard back or something???

  6. The high line doesn’t work without someone like Mings who is quick enough to get back if the offside doesn’t go our way.

    1. He was offside, Holte. Regardless, looks a very useful centre forward we could be having a look at…

  7. There’s no way we’re winning this tonight. They seem to have our number. Have the proverbial skids been hit?

    1. Fair play to them, they’re battling for the win.

We’re going to lose this – we’re playing absolute shite now – and we can’t keep a clean sheet.

Overplaying Villa’s chance of winning this cup.

Lucky to get the corner BFR – but we’ll take it!

Too pedestrian for me. We have the ability to steamroller these but the attitude is wrong. A bit similar to Forest

That’s three yellow cards the ref has failed to show to AZ players – perhaps he’s bet against himself issuing any!

    1. Yep.

    Time Zanuck’s delivered

  15. Zaniolo needs to step up. He’s done f*** all since he arrived. Diaby still in second gear for me as well.

  16. GET IIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!

  17. Dougie is a Villa legend in the making.

That was a solid performance and a good response from the Forest game.

That was a very hard fought win which all top teams have to be capable of. I admit after they scored I feared the worst but I was wrong.

Beat Warsaw at VP and we’re through to the knock out stages.

    Need to believe.

  25. The result was the most important thing. Performance left a lot to be desired but fair play to AZ who gave us a tough test.
BFR, you’re right that their goal should have been offside. I don’t know where VAR got the lines from.
I think we are missing Ramsey who offers so much more than Zaniolo or Bailey. Also it’s clear that Luiz is one of the most important players we have.
I hope Carlos is okay although I worry that he will never get back to how he was before his injury.
We need to beat Warsaw now who are probably going to be our toughest opponents in this tournament.
I’m enjoying the Thursday and Sunday weeks. Shame about the international break coming up.
