Having now fully absorbed the game on Saturday and thinking about performances this season and beyond, I have read varying views about Villa. Most agree this is not good enough and then at this point the views vary on who to blame, the need for continuity and then the obvious changing of the manager.
We need to forget about arguments against the chairman because without some kind of plan in place then we are just going to drift into the championship, I personally believe throwing money at it will only delay the inevitable of relegation.
We need to create a philosophy at the club and we need someone on that board to come up with, promote and help the club sustain a model that represents the club and the fans. I don’t think anyone at the club is capable of doing this.
“The project” as it currently stands is a great idea and in terms of how it was put forward sounded like some kind of plan. The only problem is the man in charge of the project imo has not got a clue what he is doing when it comes to tactics.
Paul Lambert is not the man to take us forward but I understand what a lot of fans are feeling in regards to chopping and changing the manager, this brings with it changes in playing staff, coaching staff and brings about changes and transitional periods that will happen more often than is needed.
We need to be in a place where the manager fits the philosophy and not the club fits the manager. Paul Lambert will do well at another club that is under performing in league one and turn them around. I have seen enough for me to be convinced he was the wrong man for the job. Saying all that I believe his appointment was a move in the right direction of changing how the club operates.
Money is not always the solution but we need the whole club pulling in the same direction and with the same philosophy I think this would benefit our youth set up and prove to make AVFC a more sustainable and successful club than it has been for sometime.
The only problem with this is Randy willing to take someone on who is not a “yes man”?
Cheers everyone for posting, i am as baffled as everyone by what has been happenng at Villa since Lerner arrived. The sale of cahill was when the alarm bells rang for me as i am sure others it was much later some earlier.
What i tried to achieve with this post was for us to think about Villa without Lerner and without Lambert.
As fans we need to unite at any given opportunity not try and put in our argument about what we think is wrong with the club, and then turn on each other it gets us nowhere.
This is just my idea taken from a few others i do feel we need a philosophy at the club and i do agree Lerner will not be the man to do it hence the last statement about yes men.
We all get a bit angry about it at times we know Lerner employed him we know he employed the other clueless idiot as well. But we do need to open up the debate beyond the blatant lerner out posts its obvious to me what he is but it looks like he is staying for the time being.
What is next for the club with Lerner?
Without Lerner.
What in an ideal world is going to push the club on and keep it in the top 8 of the prem for years to come?
I honestly believe if we dont put in a clear plan that is workable then we are doomed with or without Lerner

You’re not the first to bemoan the current fortunes of the club.
We need to sack Lambert if Lerner is staying or going. The next move we need someone who knows the game inside out and can set up a formula for the whole of Villa adheres to.
This person will not manage the team they will however scout for managers, coaches etc.
We need to sign players that fit into the system. Ie if you play counter attacking football you need players with pace.
When we sell a player we need a replacement scouted or ready to come in from the squad.
We have been wishy washy for years and every now and again we get a gem and then they are sold thats football but this is not going to work forever and if we keep on this path we will with or without Lambert or Lerner get relegated.
That is how i see it others maybe different, i dont like Lerner but it is pointless me typing Lerner Out after every post five years down the same old track
first and foremost Lamberts not going to walk he will not be sacked, so for Lambert to succeed he must get rid of mcandrew and sid get his own coaches in to train the whole club into one playing style make the first team as strong as possible in this style not pander to various players skills, as many managers from the past have quoted “football is a simple game” this is not a quick fix but Aston villa to be massive again has got to stop living off past glories and move forward with a firm plan in place we cant keep changing managers/owners every time there is a crisis down at villa park for good or bad we have got what we have and we must support what we have i do agree there should be a supporters voice in the board room with access to our leader to either get some info on what direction our club is going or some input with the feeling on the terraces
We need a new owner and a new manager to ever move forward again.

Billy it’s not that simple you can’t compare clubs. Villa have a plan Lerners plan which is precisely why we are where we are. Those who say we have no plan are wrong. There appears to be a clear direction a clear path created by Lerner. Employee Yes men, buy cheap ayers who are not good enough, pay division 1 wages. And set the manger a target of fourth from bottom while manipulating fans to spend money and take out their frustrations on the manager. Then when it looks like a change has to happen sack the manager and replace them with a clone. The circle continues. Lerner out

if this was an intentional plan what self respecting person would of taken a job with that remit. you have got to believe that the owner has another way of re-inventing the club, you say he has a clear path to finish fourth from bottom what a ridiculous statement if he is in it to make his fortune don’t you think he would be aiming higher, its not just a problem at villa, football is broken and the club that finds the alternative way forward will steal a march on everyone else.
no because to go higher he would need to spend more money with no guarantee. For example if he spent £30 million to try and get us into top 8 and we finished 12th he would have spent £30m for nothing as even though finishing 12th would get us a few million more he would still be £26m or so down

I personally believe that Randy is incompetent at taking something beyond a certain point.
The Cleveland Browns were owned by a man called Art Modell, he decided he wanted to move the whole team from Cleveland to Baltimore. This ended the Cleveland Browns as a team in NFL football. Up steps Lerners dad, Lerner snr. Now they had three years to get a team going, before the sports franchise could rejoin the NFL.
I believe the stadium was not owned by the club so they had to buy that. They built a state of the art training complex and at some point Al Lerner died.
The club never really gained momentum even though they had all these great facilities the owner had disapeared off of the face of the planet, he was hated by the fans for his silence.
His choice of coaching staff was frustrating or always failed, eventually he sold up as his heart was not in it.
This is a reflection of Villa in a number of ways, the bottom line. Is Randy just has not got what it takes to get anything beyond the foundations. I think if he stays will get relegated and he will be lucky if he gets £20m for us let alone the £200m he is rumoured to be asking.
I cant see him going anywhere soon and thinking out this long term plan ws some wsted glimmer of hope

The squad that we will have this Summer, all on extended affordable contracts, is a young and vibrant one that CAN have quality added to a mid to lower table foundation. Compare and contrast to the collection of the MON era shooting for CL football.
Whether this happens is the acid test for me.
I think that Lambert has achieved what Lerner wanted, so he won’t be sacked.
The club did have to regain control of an unwieldy fiscal position when he came, you cannot pay 97% of your revenue on wages,
Unfortunately, this does not translate well to a team that is awful to watch, and with the exception of seldom few highlights, they do not entertain.
Lerner is happy with the bigger picture, we are not happy watching the dross that is served up all too often.

You don’t make that type of statement if it isn’t true.
I would say that Lerner has invested too much to sell out too low and I don’t know what an investor would gain from buying the club for £200m+.
The Premiership is already pretty well stocked with massively backed or high income producing clubs for a new entrant to make ANY impact without spending £1bn+ from midtable or below.
Who in the world wants to do that with a team from Brum that was good in the 80’s for a bit ? Just being realistic.

So a couple of anonymous blokes on an internet forum suggest that it’s a done deal. It would be interesting, but slightly worrying, I am always cynical about these things rather than optimistic. What’s in it for them ?
I don’t know why any suggested American owner would look to buy from Randy, I could see the potential benefits of reaping worldwide revenue through Manchester United and Liverpool, but not even the most ardent claret & blue lover can say we have any chance of their worldwide exposure in the next decade or three.
We should have exploited our Empire wide market during the heydays of the late 19th Century lol !

Why would anyone do a deal and announce it now when there is still a danger of relegation and potentially paying a Premier price for what might be a Championship club?
You know how on the last day of the season fans of clubs in the mix for the top few positions and in the relegation fight listen to their radios for what’s happening at other grounds? There’s always a few cheers when someone starts a rumour that another game has seen an important goal. Cheers ring around the ground as it gets picked up, only for the sad truth to become apparent. It’s just some idiot who starts it all off thinking its funny to wind fans up.
Takeover rumours, rich Quatari investors blah blah. We’ve heard it all before. It’s just wishful thinking. A done deal would’ve been announced. A deal contingent on staying in the Premiership? Maybe. I just don’t see it happening, as I can’t see anyone paying enough for Lerner to get out of this without taking a massive loss.
Of course I know nothing about the facts, and I think that’s about the same for anyone else on here. My guess? No sale. Lambert in charge next season. Moderate investment from the owner. Mid table finish. I just hope the football improves for the sake of those hardy souls who still turn up.

Would be incredibly exciting, though I wouldn’t still want a Chelsea/City type spending.
Unfortunately a Chelsea/city type spree is the only way a club like ours can compete agsin.
Unless of course you get someone intelligent in who doesn’t need to overpay for players. Hell, look at your favorite for the title in Liverpool. Smart signings = a very good team. Rodgers hasn’t really done well in the market too be fair, but his man management ability is beyond any manager I’ve seen of late. 40-50m and we can start moving up and possibly challenge the likes of Everton/Arsenal for a top 4 spot. I know that seems low, but really a fullback, getting Okore fit, get 2 midfielders and a winger, 10m or so each and we’d be so, so much better. Obviously getting Kozak and Benteke fit also and keeping the latter is key.
Rodgers has done ok in the market courtino and Sturridge were master strokes.
Ps of course if we can do it spending £50 me then great but realistically for us to be chsllanging top 4 it’s a 100m min for title and CL around 150-200m
50m top 4, 100m for the Premier League title, 200m for the CL. I’d probably agree with that. Unless again you get a guy in who knows what he’s doing and doesn’t go for inflated priced-players.

Man U – £120m
Man C – £115m
Liverpool – £98m
You think spending £50m would get us past one or two of those next season, and that £100m would win the bloody title ???
i said £150-200m for title challange and circa a 100m to compete for top 4. Though look at liverpool doing it on a lot less that that twat MON spent when he was with us. A once in a lifetime opportunity wasted imo
