Again it seems you lot are a few hours ahead of me on this one, but I feel it deserves a post of it’s own, so here goes;
According to various sources and I’m going with Sky in particular;
https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11677/12061767/matty-cash-aston-villa-agree-fee-with-nottingham-forest-for-right-back
We’ve agreed a £14 million fee with a possible £2 million extra in add-ons.
I’ve said previously that I haven’t really seen the right back position as so much of a priority as the left flank. I think Guilbert, with Elmohamady and even Konsa as back up was sufficient.
But hey, Dean Smith’s the manager and he probably knows a lot better than me.
In fairness, Elmo is getting on a bit now and he’s just signed a one year extension to his contract.
Hence it’s probably fair to think that we might look to let him go in the winter window, where he’ll still have some value.
So, yes, perhaps getting another RB in is a good idea.
The interesting question for me is will Cash go straight into the team?
I’d definitely think so, but it begs the question on what it is that Smith doesn’t like about Guilbert?
I mean, the Frenchman has often not been played even though he’s been available and it’s led to a few fans, myself included to be surprised.
I wonder if the player’s not happy at the Villa? But that’s me guessing and wondering again.
Anyway, I like this signing, assuming it actually gets done (and it should do if you believe we’ve already agreed personal terms) as from what I’ve been reading Cash is a good pro who’s willing to learn.
I think he originated on the wing and has been moved back to full back, which should mean that he offers good options on the attack side of our game.
My only concern about him is that his being somewhat inexperienced in the defensive position means his positioning can be poor at times.
It’s just a big bugbear of mine and is why I’m not massively keen on Targett and Taylor on the other flank, but apparently Cash learns quickly and hopefully we’ll see improvement in that side of his game under Smith’s tutelage.
So happy days then and it’s not before time.
Bring in some more signings, sharpish and I’m sure we’ll all be even more positive.

It’s been a frustrating transfer window so far. I guess it will speed up from now but it looks like there will be serious competition for our main targets. We really do need to sort the striker situation before the season starts even if we haven’t done the other positions.
As for Wilson, maybe at 28 and having done cruciate ligaments in both knees it may explain the reticence in paying too much for him. I would rather be spending the same level of fee on Watkins but I appreciate he is unproven at this level.
It seem that Villa up the fee to 21 million but Wilson wants Newcastle… ..
But, as usual Bill, the same article says Wilson would be ‘happy’ to join either club.
Assuming Villa’s offer is now acceptable (and is said to be higher than Newcastle’s) two factors may be decisive. 1. Wages and contract length and 2. Guarantee on game time rather than being a ‘squad filler’.
Villa may just have the edge on both?
Our lady Villians are losing 2-0 ht thanks to Villa goalkeeper kicking balls to Man City Centre forward twice.
Minns and Grealish are subs ..
I hope i am wrong but i can’t see southgate bringing grealish on if the game is still tight. Could you imagine grealish getting the winner. Southgate would hate it.
You and me can play in a England side, 1-2pass 1-2 pass 1-2 pass that’s not football Southgate. Ffs . Bring back Stanley Mathews Georgie Best.
i feel its time for bed after watching england shop in iceland. i really can not understand southgate. i get what he is trying to do but its hard work watching england. granted iceland where solid all game. break us down attitude, but what does southgate expect they will do off course they were always going to sit deeper and narrower,
england answer to all problems is the same no what the question. pass quickly and movement off the ball to create spaces. no once did i ever see any england player taking on their opponent, sterling had loads of opportunities but they get one on one and they lay the ball back to wing to cross, that is why grealish wont play much under southgate.
i think everybody understands one key to opening a tight defence is a player taking on the defence and that alone creates panic. no player likes to defend another player running at them with trickery and skill to match close ball control and a big chance of matching a fool out of you.
southgate needs sacking, i like what he has done freshening things up with younger players. but a manager who refuses to pick his only player who can unlock defences who are intent on staying compact. needs sacking we need another manager who will risk more than passing sideways all game until the opposition are tired or bored. we need a manager who will entertain us.
Fortunately I was spared watching England as was out celebrating wifey’s birthday – much more enjoyable.
Southgate has no idea but that’s OK ‘cos neither do those who appointed him – end of comments.
i understand villa beat arsenal in a friendly but i cant find any footage, why are these games on villas youtube channel. surely they can slap them on so us fans can get to see us preparing for the season ahead .
Pete and Repeat were on a boat. Pete fell out, who was left on the boat? southgate answers repeat lmao in another word southgate answer to a football problem / question is to continue with his game plan. all the subs england made where like for like.
england are never going to win a competition playing like this. the style of play is adequate, but he is missing something in his team. all top teams have a player who can beat opponents dribbling past them. but this is taboo to southgate. repeat fell out
Had to laugh Nath but Southgate repeats no game plan at all. We’ve all complained at Villa about managers without a Plan B – it seems to me that Southgate doesn’t even have a Plan A worth talking about.
But he’s a nice young man who doffs his cap to those in authority – about time we had a manger who has a pair.
no his plan is is very basic. but to be fair they england can do that plan very well. but its so basic kids at academies are doing the same up and down the country. international should be doing stuff more taxing that just the basics. i want to be entertained watching england. so long ago now that i enjoyed england play without cringing. i mean the way we celebrated the pen we scored and then cheating scuffing up the penalty spot for iceman to miss their penalty.
i thought this was a wc final but it wasnt, only a meaningless made up cup thingy. that nobody cares about or understands it. bobby robson i enjoyed watching both in mexico and italy we actually played football then. we had two dribblers in the team and the same. we called them wingers but all the team actually did daring stuff like dribbling past opponents and passing forwards. thinking back both them squads full of entertaining players were criticised before during but not after the wc finals.
We have a lot of really good young players in england at the moment. What we need is a really good manager to go with them. Not somebody who relegated middlesborough and then arse licked way up the FA.
Not only that – how can you trust the judgement of a manager that thought Middlesbrough was / is a bigger club than Villa?
actually he must be deluded. some fans say he left to win stuff. what happened their he won one trophy same as when we was at villa, he won jack shit at palace i expect before we made him. also his penalty was very poor. how he was allowed to take one of the first penalties, i am still amazed at. i recall my mates asking before he took it is he any good at them i answered i don’t ever recall seeing him take one and reason soon became apparent
i have had one too many beers, i put exactly but when i read back the comment i put actually lmao
What is it at villa park that affects defender and goal keeper. I watched the villa v man.c match and the women are just like the villa men when it comes to defending!!!!!!
Is there a defence curse at the ground?
The transfer window very frustrating looks like they probably going to buy cheap unheard of players again this is obviously the way they want to go.
I feel sorry for Smith.
i watched the mancity villa ladies was a good game. lioness i thought did really well in the whole game. but were let themselves down by silly defending / well i think they were nervous about the game and it showed. i think they will take alot of encouragement from the way they created against a good side that conceded few goals last year. plus the villa goalie was number 2 and young. i was told if in doubt whack it out villa goalie learned that today.
First game in the Woman’s Super League against one of the two favourites to win pretty much everything – can’t get much more challenging than that!
OK we made some basic defending errors but I thought we did OK overall.
we also scored one, but it was wrongly disallowed. was a great through ball SOUTHGATE take note. villa lady ran on and blasted it at goa, that was saved but rebound, also clearly onside was dispatched
The Villa lioness beat themselves, good game but silly goalkeeper. , Nath I more or less said it on the previous card on here, 1-2 pass every player did that for 90 minutes , most boring game I could imagine. Not one player took the opposition on by going forwards, England will go nowhere when it comes to larger teams. Clones is how I seen that game, Southgate needs to pack up now because we will be umilliated . As to what’s going on over signing players is beyond me its either players not wanting Birmingham life or back handers are not forthcoming. Back to my gardening for relaxation bloody football will put me in an early grave if Corona don’t.
i concur lack of imagination and balls to do the high risky stuff, that if comes off you are rewarded highly. totally agree playing like this we wont go far. i commented earlier watching them compared um southgates robots,
also iceland were missing 5 or 6 key players and we really struggled to create much or at least dominate the game. it was a boring encounter. england persisted to do the same things over and over and iceland were very comfortable and will be angry losing a game that had nill nil written all over it
really have no gone fishing lol gone bed
Reports this morning suggests that Wilson is off to Newcastle as his preferred choice and Villa have withdrawn their offer. At the end of the day, we don’t want anyone who isn’t fully committed to joining. He is clearly an injury risk so we might be better looking elsewhere.
Also in other news Spurs are joining the race for Watkins and Guilbert in talks with Nantes. If Spurs are genuinely interested in Watkins then we are stuffed. A London club with European football and bigger than us! It wouldn’t surprise me if we lose Grealish just before season starts and have no one else signed.
I’m feeling totally underwhelmed with our recruitment and see no reason why we will improve on last season. The two weeks ahead are crucial in saving our season IMO.
Just been reading all that about Wilson and Watkins, we’ve lost out on all . Still Holte66 as you say no heart and injury suspects we dont need .
Not too sure what our transfer strategy is to be honest, we are either trying (unsuccessfully) hijack players going to other clubs at the last minute or haggle the other clubs to submission and missing out.
I’m beginning to wonder if we should revert back to home grown and stick with it, Villa being held to ransom with other clubs knowing how rich Villa are. To me we are not liked by the major big clubs and the FA included, we always get the short straw when it comes to decisions. It’s time to fight back on pricing our youngsters, or am I being over dramatic. , again.
Now its starting to look as if our owners have taken a leaf out of Levy’s book!
Are we going to end up buying third or fourth choice targets for too much money?
I’m beginning to despair.
I think what’s happened here is the owners and new director of football have had their eyes opened as to how difficult it is to bring (the right) players to the club.
It’s lovely to make sure every purchase you make is young, talented and full of piss and spunk but the reality is there is value in players that are older and maybe not so exciting that may only be around for a season or two.
A piece from the informer,
Something to understand about signing players.
Christian Purslow:
‘It takes four years to be able to pay average Premier League salaries & comply with Financial Fair Play.
I have to comply with one year of the Premier League but two years of Championship rules.
The total wage bill we CAN pay is much, much lower than clubs in the Premier League for three years.’
Wages in the Premier League massively ballooned while we were in the Championship. Even for lower to mid table sides.
UTV
Just shows what a load of cr*p FFP is and how it creates an unfair advantage for EPL clubs.
We have the fifth richest owners in the EPL but FFP has got nothing to do with ability to pay……
Or is Purslow just making excuses ….?
I guess this makes sense and explains how difficult it is to get established in the PL. It is frustrating given the wealth of our owners but it also maybe reveals something about the appointment of Lange. We may need to cast the net wider and buy from a European league where wages are much lower in order to get what we want. There’s obviously a risk there but we may need some of the Copenhagen model for at least a season or two.
However we do it, we need to strengthen quickly.
Just announced Wilson gone to Newcastle for £20m…
Quite glad; was worried we were going to pay top-dollar for a player with a poor fitness record and non-too-impressive recent scoring record.
The wage deal he’s rumoured to have got from Newcastle and a 4-5 year contract, just look completely OTT, even by Premier League standards.
Think we’ve dodged a bullet then?
Absolutely.
If the media reports are correct, he’s been given a pay-rise to take him over £100k /week; plus a 4-year deal with an option for a 5th year at HIS discretion.
The guy is what 28, going-on 29 years old? Nice deal for him, no wonder he preferred to finish his career at Newcastle.
Oh dear! I actually think the fact Newcastle felt the need to agree to Wilson contract is worse than us pulling out any deal.
He’s stats are far from impressive, he doesn’t offer anywhere enough in his overall game. Watkins has so much more about him.
I was surpised that we were supposed to be after him.
According to the “B’ham Mail” (or whatever it’s called now) it was because he’d given our defence a rough time when we’d played Bournemouth last season.
How many times have I heard that about players we’ve signed over the years?
– most of whom turned out to be pretty useless at scoring for us…
Think DSVilla has the right answer, stop chasing players that after money and go abroad for younge hopeful footballers. And give our youngsters a chance.
Agreed in principle.
However we desperately need a goal-scorer NOW; with Wesley still out for a few more weeks at least, we really do need someone who can hit the target – and I don’t know of anyone in the U23’s who can step up and do it in the short term.
Can’t see Keinan Davis ever managing a PL goal; who else is there?
So apparently we have lodged a second bid of 20 mill for Martinez of Arsenal. If and it’s a big big if we can bring him in that would be one fantastic piece of business and I think Arsenal would be out of their minds for letting him go after the way he has performed.
If we oiled land him and a quality striker then I’ll be over the moon!
Is a £20m ‘keeper really our priority?
Yes, I think it is.
To me no, we don’t need a goalkeeper. Have we struggled because of the one’s we have, again I don’t think so, our problem been a striker and midfielders, Minn had hick ups and our backs have struggled, its been a striker needed, our wings not been good and our approach to certain games has been questionable.pay the money and get a striker in now.
I think our single biggest problem last season was simply that we didn’t have anything like a natural goal-scorer (certainly after Wesley’s injury).
All of the effort going forward seemed wasted as soon as we got near the opposition box, and the midfield/defence were under constant pressure whenever one of our forwards lost posession.
Under those circumstances I don’t think any of our ‘keepers did too badly, and while I’d always like to see more quality added (in any position), I really think the available funds should go on the front, rather than the back…
Heaton is out ‘till Christmas and Steer also has a long term injury – both are injury prone.
I can’t believe you are happy to start with Nyland as our first choice keeper!
Goal keeper, centre half and centre forward the key positions – the spine of the team – and we only have one of those positions filled with the quality needed.
No argument we need a quality striker to lead the line but we also need a commanding, reliable top class goal keeper as well.
For me getting those two positions filled is top priority even if those are the only two players we sign.
