Brighton – Villa; Another loss? It’s a scary thought

So I’ve nailed my colours to the mast and said already, that I don’t think Steven Gerrard is our future.
Well, lets just say that this is the first chance he has to change my mind.

I had got it in my head from somewhere that the Seagulls were in freefall and it just so happens we have the same form over the last six games as Brighton, in one win, two draws and two defeats. Given that we’ve lost to Newcastle and Watford and drawn against Leeds at home, I’d say we probably edge it in having worse form.

Straight to squad news and the only change is that Ezri Konsa is back after suspension. Will he get straight back in?
He probably would for me, but I suspect he won’t.
I don’t expect any changes otherwise and I’m not even sure there will be any change in tactics either.

As for Brighton, Adam Webster (groin) and Enock Mwepu (hamstring) are out. Graham Potter has talked about illness issues and I assume he means covid, but there are no details. On the plus side for them, Lewis Dunk is back from suspension.

I currently have very little faith in our side.
The midfield can be walked through at will with very little resistance. Our attack creates chances, but our finishing is abysmal and our fullbacks are all too often caught out of position, while the defence looks like it will concede every time the opposition looks at it, let alone threatens it seriously.

You’ve probably guessed that I don’t think we’re going to win this one then.
Which means that I think our only hope is a draw.

It’s been a while since I had such a lack of confidence in the Villa, but I’m struggling to even contemplate another loss.
Hence I’m going to predict a 1-1 draw.
Since I struggle to get predictions right, that probably does mean another loss, as I’d be surprised if we scored more than one goal.

I can’t say I’m even looking forward to the game and that’s a first in a long time too.
Come on Stevie/Villa. Prove me wrong.

UTV!

Martinez fifth booking for us for timewasting.
Apparently the club gets a letter from the FA for that.
While they’re at it they should send one to this ref, along with his P45

He’s getting quite a few touches, not doing anything daft and not looking out of place either.

    Happy days 🙂

  8. That was a massive relief I always feel Brighton are a bit of a bogey team for us because they hold on to the ball so well but our tactics were spot on today and their biggest threat Lamptey barely did anything so fair play to the team today. Worked their socks off and had that bit of quality when needed. 2 great finishes. A couple of wins and a draw from 13 should see us safe surely we can do that? and we can then build over the summer. Would be nice to go on a good run though and finish as high as possible. The young lad looked fine when he came on and hopefully we see more of him in coming games. The ref was poor today 9 bookings in total!

  9. It wasn’t a good game and Brighton looked a shadow of the team a while back. A good finish by Cash and a really important goal for Ollie. Probably Coutinho was the least involved player apart from a good free kick. I’ve got a ticket for Southampton game so thankfully it doesn’t feel quite so daunting now!

I didn’t want to make a prediction but I had a strong feeling we’d win today – and I’m honestly not being clever after the event.

That relieves a lot of pressure on the fans, the players and the manager. Now go out and show us what you can really do.

It was reminiscent of the Everton game – gritty, hard fought and resilient. McGinn was everywhere and deservedly MoTM.

We have to find a way of combining that resilience with the more expansive style of play (particularly at home) that SG demands and all the fans want to see.

Fair play to SG – he got it spot on today.

  11. I couldn’t look until the final score. Whoooo!!! Surprised Cash didn’t get MOTM.
Was that ref worse than the idiot at the Everton game? How on earth was that handball not given???
