Bournemouth 0 – 1 Villa; A great result and we’re still in it.

Just a very brief one, but how good was that result? We win at Bournemouth, Ollie surpasses Gabby as Villa’s highest Premier league goalscorer and is also the highest scoring English player in the Prem.

The only blot was Ramsey getting sent off for what was barely a foul, let alone a second yellow, in my opinion. Harsh isn’t the word.

It was a poor game though and the last fifteen minutes had me practically panicking as the pessimist in me expected them to score with all the pressure they applied. And what about that save off the line by Cash in the last few minutes? I nearly filled my shorts.

That said, I felt we controlled the game really well, defended well enough to keep them at bay and actually looked the better side for most of the game, while producing the majority of the threat.

So deserved then.

Any bad performances? Not really, although I thought Asensio was invisible again. I don’t see that he’s done enough to justify us signing him at his wages. But then I wouldn’t say there were any particularly good performances either. It was all just a bit, er, average really, wasn’t it?

It was all about the result though and the lads got it, which is all that matters. Well done.

And a big shout out for the fans too, who were outstanding and my man of the match. If you can actually give it to a crowd?

    Great result!

  2. 97. 48. 27. That’s PL games under Unai, goals and assists. Outstanding. Leave Ollie alone.
Leave Cashy alone. Also outstanding. Refuses to be ousted.
Mings plays. Clean sheet. Again. Leave Tyrone alone.

Brilliant away win. Don’t underestimate it. Leave Unai alone. 👏👏👏👏👏

Now please dismantle Tottenham. Unceremoniously. No mercy. Get the goal difference up. Rock n roll em like we did Newcastle…

I’ve complained about all 3, as have many.
Two I’ll give you, but I can’t agree about Cash. He’s more bad than good and we need better, imo.

      1. He just got the 2 points back that Disasi binned, Badger. And he works his tits off every game! Leave our Matthew alone!

And watching MOTD it’s Cash’s tackle that regains possession for Chesty to put the cross in (his only contribution in 90 minutes) that wins the match.

    Badger123

He is THE weakest link, hence goodbye, imo. But I’ll give you Unai seems to like him.
Apart from that save, did he do anything?
Always caught out of position and doesn’t cross anywhere near well enough for me.
I honestly struggle to see any redeeming thing about him, apart from the fact that he’s a good grafter who trains well and I’d rather see Garcia get a run.
Unai definitely has his favourites and in fairness, he’s making mostly good choices.

Oh Badger mate, to turn a blind eye?
Cash, for all his faults saved the day but Chesty, your pin up boy?
Mate apart from the cross (and it was a great cross) he absolute f**king mate!
Even the commentators quoted the fact he had less touches than any player on the pitch.
Great win and happy days but if we are going to find faults with players performances Chesty has to get a mention.

There’s an article out just today that Villa will only let my “poster boy” go for £90 million.
So I’d guess that makes him the club’s poster boy too.
What do you reckon Cash is worth?

I’d rip their arm out of the socket for that offer.
          Unstoppable?
AWOL for around 89 minutes would be more apt for Saturdays showing (or lack of).

            But he performs RSS.
            68 games, 17 goals, 15 assists. Fact.
Whereas I struggle to recall the last time Cash put a decent cross in.

Cash, I know he’s not an attacker, but 146 apps and 9 assists?
            I think that’s abysmal, myself;

Mate I’m not arguing Cash is a better player, he quite obviously isn’t but credit where credits due?
Cash was instrumental in the goal, winning the ball back that then Rogers crossed for Ollie’s goal and then that goal line clearance right at the death.
Give the kid a break Badger.

That was his best performance for a while if you’re looking at the tackle and the stop.
If you think he’s good enough, that’s fine. It’s about opinions.
I want him upgraded, big time.
You rate him, I simply don’t and we are never going to agree, so we’re probably best to just leave it there.

              2. The Ron Saunders Stand avatar
                The Ron Saunders Stand

Fair enough Badger but just for the record, I won’t be rushing to buy a Matty Cash shirt anytime soon.

              3. Leave Matthew alone. 🙂

          2. I’d demand 100 million in today’s market. Take it or leave it.
Having said that, he basically does the things we brought Asensio in for, while Marco, well, doesn’t.

    2. Not sure, Badger. There have been a lot of weak links at different points this season. From Emi through to Ollie. Points have been dropped due to multiple individual errors from a number of players. Not just Cash. Very harsh to scapegoat one player.

      1. Badger123 avatar
        Badger123

BFR, but none so consistently weak as Cash, imo. I’ve been saying he’s the weakest link for the last 3 seasons at least.
It’s an opinion and probably a minority one, as many agree with you, including the manager.
But I’m by no means alone in thinking it.
Being a good grafter isn’t good enough and a top FB needs to be good in defence or attack at least, imo and he’s definitely not good in attack.
Perhaps you think he’s good at defending? I don’t.

        1. We don’t know what instructions Unai gives him. He was a wing-back at Forest and is well capable of attacking and scoring, as he proved when Unai deployed him in midfield early last season. Add to that his cover from the winger is often inadequate, how can he be effective going forward? Personally, I like his tenacity. OK, he’s not Cafu but he’s got good traits a fullback needs.

          1. Badger123 avatar
            Badger123

Actually, I believe he started as a winger and was crap, so got turned into a W/B.
            Which explains everything I’m saying.

John Gidman was way better than him imo and we’re going back 50 years there.
Crossed better AND defended better. While probably having a few pints every night.
And I’ll bet there’s others who will back me up on that.

Still, I get it. You like him.
In fairness, so would I, if we were mid table Prem.
But we’re looking to level up!

    BOURNEMOUTH V MAN CTY DRAW

    FOREST V CHELSEA DRAW

    ARSENAL V NEWCASTLE DRAW

IF WE WIN BOTH OUR GAMES WE MAKE IT

in fact we want all our competitors to draw in every game

and spurs to beat united in the final, not that i want spurs to win but keep united down where they belong

Newcastle 1-0, what’s the best outcome from our perspective?
Personally I reckon it’s Newcastle to absolutely hammer them and as a consequence improve the goal difference.
Can’t see that happening but you never know.

  8. Bill Pearson avatar
    Bill Pearson

RSS, I’ve been trying to work it out. Either way, we have to win our games, and both teams have hard games. Badger, I’m with the lads on Cash. He is a grafter after all. He’s a wingback and reliable in defence.

    1. The Ron Saunders Stand avatar
      The Ron Saunders Stand

Looking good Bill, Chelsea down to ten and a Brucie bonus, Jackson banned for the final two matches.

  9. Ideally a draw here is best for us. Then if we win our final 2 games, anything less than 2 wins for Chelsea or Newcastle would be them out of the picture.

    1. The Ron Saunders Stand avatar
      The Ron Saunders Stand

How would Chelsea picking up a point be to our benefit?

      1. My thinking was if both Chelsea and Newcastle had been on 64 points that gives us 2 teams a chance to drop points as apposed to the (if there is a winner) just one

        1. The Ron Saunders Stand avatar
          The Ron Saunders Stand

Mate I would rather Chelsea drop points, their away form is pants and they have forest away last game of the season.
They have Man U at home next week so you can take it they’re getting 3 points from that.
If it goes down to goal difference we’re f**ked!

  16. Third Generation Villian avatar
    Third Generation Villian

if chelsea win there last 2 they will have 69 and we miss out on goal difference,
if forest draw or beat chelsea we make it

but of course we have to win both our games

    1. The Ron Saunders Stand avatar
      The Ron Saunders Stand

As I posted above mate, Chelsea’s away form ain’t great but with them playing united next it’s a given they’ll get 66 points.
So fingers crossed we do the business against the Spuds and Utd then Forest do a job on them last game.
      Squeaky bum time.

    2. Don’t rule out United getting a point at Chelsea…

That’s about the top and tail of it BB

    2. Yes that’s 66 points for Chelsea if they beat United and us on 69 if we win ours. This is why I wanted a Chelsea and Newcastle draw as gambling on two teams to loose or draw one of their last two games is better than one.

  18. Third Generation Villian avatar
    Third Generation Villian

of course theres always the possibillitythat newcastle lose to arsenal and everton or man cty lose to bournemouth and fulham or we beat spurs and united by 10 – 0 each but yes we need forest to draw or beat chelsea

and also here is a good scenario for you all to think about

    villa v spurs VILLA WIN
chelsea v man utd CHELSEA WIN
west ham v forest FOREST WIN
    arsenal v newcastle ARSENAL WIN
    man cty v bournemouth DRAW

I think you will agree these are all very possible results

this would leave the table like this going into the final day

    NEWCASTLE 66
    MAN CTY 66
    CHELSEA 66
    VILLA 66
    FOREST 65

villa have the worst goal difference by a long way.

    final day games ————–

    FUL
    HAM V MAN CTY
    MAN UTD V VILLA
    NEWCASTLE V EVERTON
    FOREST V CHELSEA

    2. Is the bogroll for tears, TGV?

Here’s a question – it appears that Luis may be making overtures to Villa for a return to the club.

If so – would you have him back and at what price?

For me, yes as he would certainly add strength and depth to the squad and good players don’t become bad ones overnight – but the price would have to be sensible around £25m – £30m.

    1. 25 tops.

    2. He’s only just turned 27. Peak. McGinn will be 31 in October. Perfect solution? Dougie loves us and we love him…

Luiz is one I would have back. It would work.£15m though.

Got to be a better option than Ascencio

    1. An excellent point. As Dougie had the skill set to play the number 8 role. Though balls and goals a plenty. And no risk of not settling. No brainer.

Eze from Palace would be another amazing signing, I think he has a release clause. If we have to sacrifice JJ for PSR I could live with that…

    1. Hitchens60 avatar
      Hitchens60

Agreed Neil; I’d have him top of my wish list.

The other player I’d go for is Wissa at Brentford.

Bournemouth have some top quality defenders; Kerkez, Huijsen and Senesi would all add to our squad.

Win our next two games; qualify for the CL and with Emery as coach we’ll be in the pound seat for substantially upgrading the squad.

      1. Mbuemo is as good as Wissa. Lacroix worth a look for the defence? Agree on Eze.

        1. I do like Wharton as well. Pulls strings and loves a forward pass.
