ATTACKING AT HOME

imageHi everyone UTV
We lost our 1st game at home this season last month to Liverpool.Im sorry to say but in the 1st half we looked like the visitors. We gave away the ball to cheaply more in the 1st half than the 2nd.Bacuna in the 1st half was terrible and also Delph. The 2nd half was better.
Now to get back to the title of the article attacking at home it does exactly what it says on the tin.Im hoping that Lambert will set us up better this Saturday against Newcastle and we actually look like the home team and not like the visitors.
I would like to see a 4-3-3 open attacking fluid set up with full backs attacking up to support the 3 in midfield and the 3 up front.I would like to see an organised strong back four,Strong midfield with creative flair and a quick pacey front 3.I also would like to see a free forming midfield and attack as we go forward mixing up the positions(Dutch 70s style) just to confuse the opposition.
I think what I’m trying to say is I would like to see a positive, attacking, free flowing, confident home performance with a victorious outcome. This will prove to me we can become a different team at home to when we are playing away.Home-Attacking and positive bossing the game.Away-Counter attacking pacey football.
I don’t think I am asking to much for Lamberts AVFC to put in attacking, positive performances at home to prove we are not a one trick pony and just counter attack.
My team for Saturday would be-Guzan,Lowton,Vlaar,Okore,Baker(Luna?)
Bacuna,Westwood,Delph
Weimann,Benteke,Agbonlahor.
What are your views on our home style and what sort of set up would you like to see Lambert play at home?UTV

I like the sound of that, with potentially Helenius coming on for Bacuna later on, depending on how it all goes. Luna is first choice LB. I suspect Baker is going to be cover for CB and LB unless any of them suffers a drop in form.

So basically you’re hoping we can control about 70% of the possession and hope counters don’t hurt us?

It’s a nice world but a creative midfield of Bacuna, Delph and Westwood to not only control the midfield but be creative? Delph’s far too hurried in everything he does and isn’t creative, Westwood likes to slow it down and isn’t creative and I’ve seen Bacuna a couple times further up and he can be creative but Newcastle’s midfield is probably the only thing they’ve got going for them. Things aren’t going to be as simple as “attacking, free flowing”. I mean I’d love to see it, but we don’t have a talented enough team to pass it around Newcastle with ease, force them to hit on the break constantly, defend that while attacking constantly.

straight out attack is suicide. tactics need to be much more circumspect. I would much prefer us to retain possession for the majority of play, than simply attack, attack, attack. that said, we have one hell of a front three and all they need is good supply and we will get goals, 3 or .4 I reckon. so I do want to see midfield playing positively, but ready to defend as required. this game has been too long coming, can’t wait. Id prefer Sylla or KEA instead of Bacuna. He’s looked terrible (until he filled in at RB) Weimann has not had the best of starts either and I think as he has recently played the internationals, Saturday he will be replaced (or at least I hope) maybe for Tonev. So many options this years, its great. Whatever the case, ill be there cheering us on. UTV

4-3-3 works best as a counter attacking formation and the problem is(although its early days, only one poor half at home against Liverpool)we should be as is said ‘bossing’ the game on Saturday.
Newcastle are poor at the moment plus the fact the squad and the club in general is in turmoil, most magpie fans ive chatted with are expecting a drubbing on Saturday and even im quietly optimistic for a win, in fact id go so far as to say anything less than 3 pts will be piss poor, this is a game we should win. if we go one up 1st we can then comfortably rely on the counter and probably bag more.
the problem I see, or the major one is that everything goes through benteke when we are trying to create, we bossed the 2nd half against Liverpool but they kept bentekke quiet(even then mingolet had to make 2 quality saves from him).
teams will get wise to this very quickly I hope this has been addressed during the break and we can put at least a little more variety in our build ups come Saturday.
plus its my 1st game of the season 🙂
IO, IO, ITS UP THE HOLTE I GO! 🙂

We can boss the game just as much by possession as we can by attacking. if all we do is attack the ball eventually ends up with the other team, be it we lose possession or they have to kick off 😉 I want us to apply pressure by playing out from the back, retaining possession until the opportunity for a goal comes. patient, positive. So Benteke dislocates the shoulder of the Malaga player and Kozak causes Pasqual to receive 50 stitches after he elbowed him in the game against Italy. Ferocious strikers we have. (No I’m not happy about it, or condoning it).

neither of them were sent off for the challenges, in fact benteke wasn’t even booked so I believe they were decent challenges, the injuries are just unfortunate part of the game. we do see our players sent off week in week out or even booked for deliberate bad challenges so I cant see your point here.

Well the first point was that our strikers are beastly and the 2nd is I’m not trying to make it sound like a good thing. However I’m still questioning Kozak’s elbow to the face. I mean you see players rising up with their arms spread out, but his arms were up in a way that the injury was going to happen if it hit him.

Nothing less than 3 points tomorrow will do. If we don’t comfortably win I’ll be asking a lot of questions about what the next steps in the building process really are. We should have beaten Noo’astle last season at home, just the first half letting us down and a cabaye screamer. We have improved ten fold since then and really should be looking at 3-1, 4-1 win. Newcastle have lots of issues on and off the field at the moment and there is now excuse should we lose.

We need to press and not look like the away side. Counter attacking for 90 minutes will not do. We are slowly becoming very very good at the possession game and should be using this at home to tire teams out and break them down at OUR pace.

I think we will win tomorrow so obviously no criticism from me at the moment. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (Liverpool the jury is still out for me) are good teams and much much better than Newcastle. This is the first game proper game this season where we can see how far we’ve come.

3-1 the villa boys, Benteke 2, Kozak 1 (sub) UTV

Can’t really call this, if the Villa that turned up at Arsenal and Chelsea then it’s all good and your prediction could well be right but on the other hand if it’s a repeat of the first half against Liverpool a draw looks favourite (imo). Either way roll on 3 o’clock tomorrow.

Is it just me or is anyone else glad internationals are over? The most boring 2 weeks ever IMO. Sick of internationals and fa cup games getting in way if prem. I think a 1.1 draw tomorrow can’t see having enough to beat them but don’t think they will best us either.

You ask a lot of questions of them anyway. Nothing will change. I expect Newcastle to put up a fight at the start but then get lazy and complacent as the game goes on. We’ll take them.

After their battering against Citeh on the Monday night, Newcastle haven’t conceded in their last two games, so talk of we must score three or four is a little harsh.

They’ll have Cabaye back, it will be interesting to see if he’s playing for a move.

That said, the Liverpool game wasn’t disastrous, and their 100% record would probably show that a single goal defeat in a game that we made chances wasn’t too shabby.

The set-up for the Liverpool game in the first half looked a team that didn’t quite know where they were all meant to be playing. Bacuna and the front three were interchanging, and that left Lowton particularly exposed and Liverpool played on that, it’s where the goal came from.

Second half I thought we improved significantly and possibly merited a point.

The natural shape and make up of the side lends itself to counter attacking play, but against a team I would hope to finish above in the table, we do need to turn possession into chances and goals.

I think that we’re getting pretty good at holding the ball and playing around the back four and to Delph and Westwood, but if it then ends up going back to Guzan after two minutes to launch to Benteke, there is an obvious breakdown in the middle. A lack of creativity.

It’s nice to be going to a match expecting to win, or at least see a good performance, rather than praying for a lifesaving win but fearing the worst.

Talking of Martin Oneil.. i think that would be a DISASTROUS appointment by Ireland..

All these pundits and ex players coming out and saying he is the right man for the job ( inc PL ) must be living in cloud cuckoo land..

Oneil’s biggest fault was that he didn’t have a scooby how to play against European teams.. how to set a team up etc.. he was a typical British manager living in the 80’s.. two wide men whack it into a striker..

That stuff doesn’t work at International level.. we can’t even get the likes of Gerrard Lampard Rooney and co to adapt to it.. so Oneils got no chance…!!

So if we had a time machine and traveled Sir Ron’s team (The Grey, Little, Dehaan of the late 70’s or the European winnings side) forward in time and they played Lambert’s lot they’d be played off the park? Yea alright then.

This is a side issue about the home form particularly against the top sides. There is an interesting video on the BBC football site where Pat Nevin talks about pitch sizes. It suggests that we have the biggest pitch in the premiership and highlights how much additional mid field space is available on the bigger pitches. The contrast with the pitch at Stoke is remarkable.
Should AVFC reduce the pitch size against the top clubs to restrict their space in midfield.
Should it be changed in line with PL’s tactics?
Can AVFC change the size and still comply with FA and Premier League regulations.

Interesting you point this out, Sam Allardyce used to change pitch size a lot while at Bolton, don’t know about now at West Ham. For example he made pitches smaller in European games and against Arsenal (this is when they were the unbeatables) and this is his reason for success against them back in the day, Arsenal always found it tough at Allardyces Bolton. It’s a very interesting tactic and one I believe heavily in. There is no rules against changing the pitch game by game, within the set boundaries of course.

So we… Aston Villa… Should be beating… Newcastle 3-1, 4-1 to show how far we’ve progressed? Lol this place makes me laugh. Newcastle aren’t in some big danger, they lost to City, drew West Ham and beat Fulham. If they lost to all 3 and conceded 7-8 goals between the games then maybe, maybe I can see it, but they’re far from struggling. 2-1, 1-0, 2-0 is more than enough. It’s not like they’re Championship material at the moment.

id say they are, im firmly expecting to see Newcastle in another relegation battle this season, they just escaped last season, I only hope we wont be down there with them again.
that said big scores shouldn’t really be expected, id be happy with the 3pts no matter how they come. my concern would be if we lost because this is a game we should by rights win.

They probably will be in a relegation battle but I don’t think they’ll go down. There’s 5-6 that will be down there and I don’t expect us to be one of them and think they’ll again stay up. I’m not ruling out a big win for us but we’re not that strong of a team to dominate their midfield which is the only position I’m worried about, as I believe they’re still better there, attack them constantly, scoring 4-5 and not conceding 4-5 ourselves.
