All quiet; except we could have had Jordan Rhodes

There’s not really much to report, as what’s out there is pretty meaningless and mostly going over the transfer window, which erm, has finished.
To be fair, I’ve quite liked the Birmingham Mail’s timeline thing, but you have to feel it’s already run out of steam, as it becomes difficult to keep it up when there’s not much happening.
I know that feeling quite well, as it goes.

But I digress.

Jedinak missed training for the Roos and while they’re trying to play it down in saying it’s just a knock, I suspect he won’t make the next game. Not that I care who they’re playing. I’m just saying.

Grealish also got a knock and didn’t play in the U-21’s latest victory. I think.
I can’t even be bothered to look properly, to be honest, as I only care about how they’re doing for the Villa.
And this WC qualifying just detracts from what we need, which is our players at their best for us, simple as.

There is one bit of news that’s out there though.
We apparently tried to get Jordan Rhodes on loan from Middlesboro.

I can’t say I’m mad keen on him, but he has got a 1 in 3 strike rate for them, which, while not great, holds up well against any Villa striker of late. Particularly Gabby.

The club have denied this, but Xia did say we were in for one or two on the last day and I suspect that if we’d have got Gabby temporarily off the books, this deal might have happened.

But at the end of the day, it didn’t happen, so it’s another non-story.

Roll on the Forest game, I say.

Why Rhodes when we have 3 strikers who in their last season in the championship scored a combined 60 goals. A supply for those forwards is what we needed.

Because we play with at least 2 to start with. And they did fear for January, though we’ll have Gestede as his Country didn’t make it.

Caertainly one of the finest players I’ve ever seen in a Villa shirt, and a loyal servant at the club over the years.

However – and this isn’t meant to sound harsh – I’ve wondered for some time how Sid and Uncle Kevin [KMac] managed to survive at VP for so long while other management staff came and went: more to the point, just what where they doing with the ‘youth teams’ that never really seemed to translate into success as those players reached the stage when they should have been in the first team?

Spot on Ardent. A great player does not always make a great coach. While the chances of a 14 year old youth team player actually developing into a Premiership player are about 100/1, about the same as a squaddie making the SAS and for similar reasons, the impression is the Villa youth system has under-performed.

One of my idol’s and always will be, Sid has been a rock to Villa and should be remembered by the club for all he’s done over the years, Nice one Sid and all the best lad.

In better news, Grealish has signed a new 4 year deal.

Here’s an interesting story; I wonder why it never happened?

    Going back to Grealish signing a new contract;
I read that he’s signed a new deal worth £3 mill over 4 years?
    That’s £15k a week.
    And absolute bollocks, imo.
But if it’s true, that’s a great deal for the club, given his potential.
And a massive fail for his agent, who surely wouldn’t have signed 4 years away so cheaply?

Isn’t his Dad his agent? Sounds like he’s trying to keep young Jack’s feet on the ground. If he develops his full potential then a lucrative renegotiation will be open to him in a couple of years time.

Hitch, Grealish actually needs to show something first, imo.

He currently reminds me of a Wilshere or that kid who played for Everton (Fox in the box?)
Full of promise, but ultimately crap.
He needs to start scoring, or at least creating goals, if he wants to move up a level.
The pressure is on, for him. and we’ve all seen it so many times mate, imo.

No arguement from me Badger – taking your point about the alleged contract details suggests he’s been told the same by the club. If so good for the club but also for Grealish if he had offers to go elsewhere. I think that’s the point I was trying to make 🙂

I’ve heard the odd story about him drinking at the Delta club in Erdington, Bill.
I won’t repeat them, but it seems he was as prolific in his drinking as he was in his goalscoring.
I can’t fault anyone for that, as long as he does the business on the pitch; which he did.

Little surprised that not more comment about Grealish signing a new four year contract and his comments.

Can RDM and his coaching team get the most from this obviously talented player and just how good is he?

According to the Mail Richards could have gone during the window but RDM blocked it –

    http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/explained-reasons-aston-villa-blocked-11857885

Not sure what I make of this. I suppose I can understand it from the point of view that we’ll need some cover in defence during a long season and I never quite had him in the same bracket as Lescott, Guzan and Flabby but I’m still surprised.

Well maybe he’ll surprise us all this season and show us he’s for real or, perhaps more likely, RDM has another target set to come in during January and we’ll see him go then.

I thnk there is to much hype over Grealish, he is young if he is going to be a star he needs to shift his game up a gear or two and for 90 min +. This is the season he should shine over to you Jack.

Agree he’s good in flashes. Probably a decent player to bring off the bench to give us something a bit different in last 20 mins or so. Especially as he is up against tired defenders

There are times when Grealish looks a class above everyone else on the pitch. He needs to sustain it. This could be a big season for him. In a team with the goals return from midfield for the last 5 years has been pathetic he could be an improvement there as well.

I hope he keeps his head down and does the business for us

Personally I think Jack is class. A player that should be one of the first on the team sheet. His progress has been stuttered due to our club being a shambles plus some off field troubles but he looks back in the game now and fired up. 2 goals already this season and I think there will be more to come I’m betting at least 10 from him this season.
