Villa 0 – 0 Southampton; A point that saves Lambert’s neck?

I think many of us would have taken a point today and even I managed to predict this one, although I said it would be one each.
There were suggestions that Southampton might already have their holiday heads on, but I never agreed with that point of view and indeed Southampton came out much the better side and looking much the bigger threat for the first half hour or so.
We came back into it quite well though and were actually the better side for around ten minutes in the latter part of the first half.

We also started the second half brightly, although I always felt that our opponents looked the best bet to score.
Despite Marc Albrighton putting in some cracking crosses yet again, I never really got the feeling that we’d put one away, whereas I always felt Southampton might.
Which is why I actually agreed with Grant Holt coming on today.
I don’t feel he added much, but it was the right call in my opinion.

Talking points?

Well, they had a decent penalty call for handball with Bertrand being the one involved, but I never like those ones, where you’re only a couple of feet away when the ball is hit.
You don’t get a chance to move away and given that I like to think of myself as very honest, I’m going to agree with the ref not giving it.

The best talking point for me though was Callum Robinson getting a few minutes.
It’s about time the kids got a look in, even though I’m not madly convinced they’re good enough.
The point is, if we don’t give them a go, we’ll never know will we?
He certainly got involved in the few minutes he was on the pitch, so I’d say he deserves another go.

Was his appearance down to Lambert or Cowans though?
The cynic in me thinks it might indeed have been down to Lambert, but only after he’s been told by Lerner or Faulkner to get at least one of the kids on just to appease one of the fan’s biggest criticisms of the manager.

I can’t say it was a bad performance by the lads today. They all worked hard and at the end of the day we got a much needed point.
I’m still wondering where the goals are coming from without Benteke.

But I very much suspect that might be the point that saves us from the drop and possibly more importantly Lambert’s neck.
Which is why I don’t know how to feel today.

While of course, I’m glad of the point, I also want Lambert gone as I simply don’t trust him to deliver anymore.

I suspect many of you may feel the same.

Lambert has to go at the end of the season. Think back to Mcleish, one day after season we shipped him out. I’m hoping that we do the same again. Lambert has done nothing to deserve to carry on at Villa.

The best positive of all – it is highly likely that there are now only 4 games left under Lamberk and hopefully Lerner.
Lets just get over the line and then 100% focus can go on the possible takeover.

The difference with today and every other game is our defensive line sat higher up the pitch. So for all of the possession Southampton may have had they did not really do much with it. Both teams had missed chances to turn the game.

Albrighton was great, Westwood played well as did KEA. Wiemann has not done anything for me this year.

Everyone seemed to have worked hardno complaints from me but no real cheers either

Dull and lucky to pick up a point. No urgency and we were poor out the blocks. More effort than in previous weeks but it’s evident the quality just isn’t there.

i personally not sure, i mean the guy hasn’t be given a fair crack. but at the end of the season if he goes farewell. but many issues need to be sorted, like lerner gets his puppet to say villa are not for sale last month, when clearly lerners cost cutting, is nothing more than, making the books look more inviting to prospect buyers.

if we survive. also lerner is willing to sell, then waiting for the new owners to replace lambert is the only way. i av doubts lerner will find some muppets to pay 300 mill, wot lerner has blown, 200 mill wot some spin doctors quoted, i doubt will temp lerner. didn’t fulham sell for around 200 mill and they are located in the capital

i agree standards of play has deteriorated, but when you replace premier class players with novices and foreign, you are gonna get poorer standards, behind the scenes villa finances have improved remarkably in the lambert era

They both need to go Lerner wants out and will run the team on the bare min to stay up. And lamberk is crap pure and simple

u missed my point, lambert has brought these cheaper players in, because he was instructed to lose the big earners, hence not having a fair crack. he created a squad of mostly players not quite ready for premiership. in the 2years hes slashed the debts and running costs are much lower. we were in a very bad shape b4 he arrived we all av short memories. but your rite lerner needs 2 jump first, new owner will want his own manager so everyone should be happy, YOU WOULD THINK we aren’t ever happy lmao

he needed to create a squad ppl get injured, u can’t rely on 13 players like 1981’s. lerner would have insisted on wages reduction. hence why a bomb squad, next year we could add about 3 or 4 proven premier class, add 2 or 3 of the youth players like robinson the 2 loaned out in league 1 this year, mutton and bent maybe moved on. players lambert bought if they fail 2 make the grade. it won’t be to hard 2 move um on, as their wages are much smaller

I dont thnk anyone sang for Lambert either. I heard Claret Army but no Lamberts army.

I think everyone accepts the inevitable which is Lambert leaving n the summer. We were not great but the difference in the quality was obviously an improvement. i never understood why Baker and Vlaar always sat in the D. Today they sat on the half way line, i think this one tactic shut down most of Southamptons attacks. I think this was something that has been introduced by our temporary coaching staff.

I bet Culverhouse was bursting blood vessels when he saw Robinson come on, he had a couple of bad touches but the crowd got behind him and he got the minutes on the pitch he deserves.

The game was not quite dull but not very exciting either.

Sunderlands run in is probably the most interesting and will have the biggest impact on the bottom half of the top table than any other team. Norwich are gone for me as are Fulham the other place could be anyone from the baggies, Cardiff, Sunderland, Swansea or ourselves.

Must admit that this is yet another season that I can’t wait to end. Becoming a bit of a habit…

Always used to enjoy the run-in because we were often competing for something – even if it was only a promotion out of a lower division, or trying to qualify for the old UEFA Cup places; but that all seems very long ago.

Problem is that unless there’s a top-down serious change at the club between now and August [we’re only talking about 4 months!] then what will there be to look forward to next term? Same old, same old.

The Mumbling Manager isn’t the only change that’s needed; we got rid of one just like him two years ago and look where we are again.

Have you looked up Baseball teams though? Owners throw money around like it’s nothing. I don’t know much about it as it bores me, but average players are signing 5-6 year deals worth 20-30m over that time period. That’s 4-5ish million a season. Owners are doing that all over the place in Baseball. They’re not afraid to splash the cash.

It could be the incredibly frugal Astro’s owner or the more willing Ranger’s owner. Or it could not even be an MLB owner who wants us. That’s the fun part of speculation. But I highly doubt anyone among Villa Park are telling these writers to make up stories that MLB team owners wanna buy Villa.

A comment by someone who I guess knows more about the Astro’s owner than either of us would.

“Saying that Crane is “running things on the cheap” is a misrepresentation of what he’s doing.

Yes, it’s true the Astros haven’t spent a ton of money on their major league roster since he took over. They’ve spent a very healthy chunk of money on acquiring young talent that hasn’t reached the majors yet, and have put a damn good staff in place to develop what they have and bring in more. The organization was in no shape to compete when Crane bought it, so he focused on getting it healthy financially again and rebuilding their minor league system to get them ready to be healthy in the long run, and made it clear that once the organization is ready, there would be money available to expand the payroll and bring in premium talent.

Long story short: Crane doesn’t just go in blindly hurling around money like some owners do, who generally wind up making existing issues worse in the long run. He wants to compete in the long term, and builds smart to do just that.”
