Alexander Tonev and Antonio Luna have both been left out of 26 squad that has traveled to America for their one week pre-season tour that will see Aston Villa face FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo, both teams are based in Texas. Injured strikers Kozak and Benteke have been included among the 26 player squad while Senderos and Guzan have also joined following their extend break due to their World Cup participation.
Enda Stevens and Jack Grealish have both been included, Stevens has been preferred to Luna to challenge left-back’s Richardson and Joe Bennett for the left-back position this season.
Luna has been linked and it’s looking likely that he will be leaving. Luna didn’t play too poorly in his first few games, but his performances dipped significantly during the course of the last season and needs to be sold. Tonev was given a chance against Mansfield, but he didn’t play too well either. I really did want Tonev to play well, because on paper he is very promising, a fast winger that likes to cut in and shot. Unfortunately, he’s only really hit the target once or twice throughout the season.
Will we really miss em??????I ask myself.

Think Tonev should be given another 12 months to prove himself. I thing there is potential in him, but doubt whether he will ever be PL standard…….but then again lots of Manure fans were saying that about Jannuzi at one point.
So…players that Lambert bought a year ago are replaced by players that he froze out. It’s almost comical.

For me, only Guzan, Vlaar, Delph and Benteke (when fit) would be definite starters…4 players! The rest have been average or have yet to really prove themselves at Villa. I have a feeling we are going to see quite a few changes to the team over the preseason and early season as Lambert/Keane try and figure out the team, formation, etc. Very worrying.

I agree with you, a lot of this is down to Lerner. The club is a shambles from top to bottom. However, Lambert also has a lot to answer for. There is no way in normal circumstance that he would still be the manager of this club.
i believe this buying foreign young nobodies was another upstairs decision ~ lerner was turning the tap off back then. he (lerner) needs to go asp or hire somebody with football knowledge to make the decisions upstairs.
So it looks like we still have to sell/loan 4 players to make a 25 man squad, and more if we want to sign… Anyone. Unless Lerner again is going to be paying wages despite players not leaving and not being able to play.

Ok, you might be saving on app money or goal money, which might save you 25%, but at the end of the day they were still our best players, who are more likely to keep you up.

I don’t believe that PL bought Senderos to replace Vlaar but hopefully to play a back 5 with 3 CB’s (Okores, Vlaar and Senderos) with Vlaar playing a ‘sweeper’ type role which is the role he played so successfully in the WC.
