Defoe is probably still a top player but that fee and wage is ridiculous. Panic buy I think like us and Bent. More fool them.

In January you should do your best to bring in proven players that can step in straight away rather that somebody that may or may not be any good.
Sunderland struggle to score goals (sound familiar) and Defoe is a proven goalscorer.

Maybe Sunderland are prepared to take a financial gamble on Defoe it’s only for 3 months, but if he delivers then PL survival is achieved???.if not money wasted.

I believe West Ham are happy to release him. Lambert couldn’t handle him, I could imagine him knocking Lambert out when Lambert tells him his tactics. If we had a good manager who can manage players it’d be worth a risk, but we have Lambert…..

By the way a welcome to Carles Gil, seen him play once for Elche against Sevilla, from memory he was substituted off late in the game. Looked good and a better attacking talent than anything the Villa have but certainly needs to mature a little.

Still need two more attacking players this window someone to play central and one on the left and Gil on the right all behind Benteke or even Kozak when he’s back. Sanchez as the DM.

from bham mail – “I’ve enquired about a lot (of other players, too) so we’ll see what happens.

“If I can bring one or two more in then I will.

Maybe this Ravel Morrison link isn’t too fabricated. If we could get him on our terms e.g. wages then I think it would be an alright signing. He will at least try and be positive with the ball.

Lambert should stick Gil in the middle in the hole imo. Weimann has had a terrible season but does make good runs although a little headless, we need someone pulling the strings from the middle linking all Sanches’s hard work to the front men. If Gil can provide that service I’m sure we start finding some goals. I don’t see the point in sticking him out wide right/left if he can play in the middle as well.

There is a hell of a lot of pressure on this lad and he hasn’t even kicked a ball yet, I feel for him in that sense. We should try not to scrutinise the lad if he starts slow, he’s already in some fans eyes being dubbed as some sort of saviour for the VIlla and our immedaite season run-in.

If he clearly ain’t no good though, say hello to the Championship my fellow Villans.

Could definitely do with at least one more wide man coming in, I thought Sinclair was a good shout personally but I imagine wages are the issue with that one. I haven’t seen enough of this Ravel Morrison to judge but apparently he’s got talent and I’m not a fan of that Jan(howeveryou spell it) fella from United either, he runs and runs and runs…to absoutely nowhere

New Regime, Gil is traditionally a wide player cutting in, however can play in the middle too. I think we should be looking for a out and out number 10 this window, so we allow Gil to do what he does best and have a number 10 to do what they do best also, if we can get someone good on the left also would be nice…

    Imagine a new attack

    Guzan
    Hutton, Baker/Clarke/Senderos, Okore, Cissokho
    Sanchez, Delph
    Gil, New Buy, New Buy
    Benteke/Kozak

Wake me up for the Liverpool game, I prefer dreamland

Soccer Sauce on twitter claims we’ve contacted Stoke over a cut-price deal for Huth. Guessing as a replacement for Vlaar.

Could give a few of the rumours Incog had over the last week but I’m sure by now people never believe him. Which too be fair he tweeted 2 days before any of the usual papers (Metro, Daily Mail, Telegraph) etc wrote about it.

See Huth has got himself into some ‘social network’ bother – could get an FA sanction; also reading that piece, his injury form is even worse than Vlaar’s.

Why would we want another crock?

He’s been on the bench for the most part, which is why he’d be cheap. He did have a calf injury. Think Stoke prefer Muniesa to him, and now that they have Wollschield he won’t play at all. I have no idea if it’s true but he is decent.

Canales, Vela and Januzaj along with their Captain Prieto, who I’d have always wanted to see leave Sociedad for Villa, but fantastic he’s stuck with them this whole teamm. While not the marquee team, those 4 together look a frightening, quick and technical talented attack quartet.

we had the best youth set up in europe. Lambert has not used it he has ruined it.

Steve – “we had the best youth set up in europe” – how do you reckon that?

We’ve been hearing about the youth set up for years, but how many products are actually playing, or have played, at any top-level teams in Europe?

      [Cahill the only one??]

Didn”t we win the next-gen a couple of years ago. Yet not one player has been given a run in the team. Since houllier left not one young player has been given a run in the team. You can not judge a player on one or 2 games.
e.g. Westwood comes and is played consistently – Gardner / johnson / burke.don”t get a chance. Tonev, helenius, bowery signed before looking at grealish and robinson.
i”m just fed up of signing cheap players ahead of giving one or two of our own a fair crack of the whip.

you can turn that argument around saying, if them youth players can’t get into the team because of them rejects. then they aren’t good enough. gardner isn’t getting good reports at brighton, their fans said they cant see the point of him, now hes at forest. johnson is in div 1. grealish shows good touches and did well on loan in div 1, but hes not premiership class as we speak. if villa were doing better and fans were not getting angry at results, manager, performances,,,,, iam sure he would be used more. but no manager would want to over play a young player, in such a bad team lacking confidence.

I agree. The point I am trying to make is how do you get prem experience. We seem to overlook giving our own free youth a chance in favour of buying cheap foreigners or players from the lower divisions. We can’t score so why not give Robinson a run of games. He won’t do worse than grabby.
On another note lambert has now got a creative player but for me our forwards are too static and far apart.

in the current team and situation its had to blood youth. iam sure robinson and grealish will come good and may play for villa for many years. but its not the time to risk ruining a young career before its really begun. robinson i feel was brought back because the club wanted to loan bent out. he was doing very well at preston and was earning good praise from their manager and fans

If we were going to sing Defoe, we should have done it ten years ago! But he’s definitely the type of player I think we need alongside Benteke. Can’t see us getting him though. Thought he didn’t want to leave London previously because he enjoyed the party lifestyle too much – are there even any clubs in Sunderland?! Anyway, I’m excited to see what Gil can offer. He looks skillful with a few tricks up his sleeve and likes to go at people – hope he gets a fair crack of the whip! Could be just what we need, but could also take him a while to settle in and adjust to the Premier League. I’m encouraged by this signing, as it shows that Lambert can see where we need improving. If he can just see where his tactics and substitutions need improving we might make some progress!

      OriginalLondonLion January 14, 2015 at 11:49 pm . Reply

There are very few Defoe like characters in football which is why the old original still gets talked up. What sets him apart is he thinks 2 moves ahead. As he sees a pass coming in to his strike partner he runs away from his marker to get 8 to 10 yards away and then he runs up to but not beyond the off-side line as his partner plays the ball. If the ball is knocked on he is on to it at least two yards ahead of the defender.

Lambert has not seen anything that needs doing until long after the fact is written in this blog and others, even his defensive pairing of Clark and Okore came about because they were the last two standing. to give you an example of something he still does not see is that Benteke and Agbonlahor want to play exactly the same role on the same blade of grass.

Problem for lerner is if we go down he will lose a dam sight more than £3m. Not only will he lose around £80m sky money he would be lucky to sell the club at what he paid for it. Potentially he could lose hundreds of millions
